Chapter Eight
The football game was cancelled, after all how could they be expected to play when their coach was found dead in the parking lot less than an hour before? Elena had just recovered from Damon’s kiss which had been followed by his sudden departure and was walking to the bleachers with her blanket when she heard the sirens.
She didn’t see his body and didn’t bother approaching where the ambulance and police cars were congregated. As she walked back to her car she saw an animal control truck come speeding up, it was the same one that had come when Vicki was attacked at the bonfire. Did that mean this was another animal attack? But what kind of animal would come into the middle of town to attack someone, and how would no one have seen it?
As she slid into the driver’s seat she remembered a conversation she had with Matt the day after Vicki was attacked.
“Did she say what is was that attacked her?” Elena asked.
Matt replied in a hushed tone, “she said it was a vampire.”
Since Vicki had always been a druggie Elena had just assumed all the pain medication was messing with her head. Because sure enough the next time Matt asked she said it was an animal, and even now she was insisting it was just an animal that had come out of nowhere. But was it possible that she hadn’t just been high when she was talking about vampires. Was it possible that the animal that was attacking everyone was a vampire?
By the time she reached home her mind was filled with images of fangs, glowing red eyes and dripping blood. She kept imagining the typical Hollywood vampire with its chalky white skin making it look more like a corpse than a human.
However once the shock of Mr. Tanner’s death wore off, she was showered and clad in her fuzzy pyjamas it was almost impossible to suspect vampires. As she laid down in bed she actually shook her head in disbelief when she thought about how certain she had been. Vampires didn’t exist, it was as simple as that, they were just stories made up to frighten children.
A small voice in her mind asked if it wasn’t vampires then what was it killing all those people? Yes she didn’t have an answer for that, but it wasn’t up to her to figure that out, it was up to the police.
Now that she wasn’t terrified that a vampire was going to spring out of every shadow Elena was able to think about something else. And the first thing after Mr. Tanner’s death that her mind jumped to was Damon Salvatore.
She was surprised how open he had been, he always seemed so closed off. And he had seen the same thing on the side of the road that she had, it hadn’t been just her going completely insane. It was amazing how even though she barely knew him and had only met him a couple days ago she felt this strongly for him. It was like someone had taken someone else’s feelings and poured them into her.
Elena fell asleep thinking about how Damon’s lips had felt on hers and how she had only wanted more out of the mysterious man who had suddenly appeared in her life.
She[D1] was standing in the living room of the Salvatore Boarding House. Although she had only been there once she recognized it instantly, what with all the vintage furniture and sense of incredible wealth it was basically impossible to forget.
Before she could even question why she was there she heard the door open. She took a couple steps so that she could see who was there.
Two people walked in hand in hand, it was Damon and...her. Neither of them seemed to see her however and when they stopped she looked at him in confusion.
God this was so weird, watching herself. But that wasn’t even the weirdest part, even though it was kind of like she was watching a movie play out in front of her she felt everything the other her must be feeling and seemed to know exactly what she was thinking. For instance right now she was confused as to why Damon had stopped here instead of leading her up to his bedroom, her confusion mingled with a little bit of disappointment.
