Chapter Five

            What was going on?

Elena ran her hand through her long brown hair in frustration. It had been an hour since she left the Salvatore Boarding House and she hadn’t been able to think about anything else. Yet despite the hour of contemplation she was still no closer to figuring out what had happened.

Besides the bird and Damon’s sudden appearance talking to him had been surprisingly normal. For some reason she just felt comfortable around him. It was when Stefan finally made an appearance that things changed.

Stefan hadn’t spared her so much as a glance, all his attention had been focused completely on his brother. She couldn’t help but wonder what had sparked the hate that had filled his glare. But the obvious tension between the two brothers wasn’t even the worse part.

The second Damon’s lips had made contact with her hand when he had been saying goodbye something happened. If anyone asked she would find it impossible to explain what exactly had happened without sounding crazy.

After a moment of disorientation it was like a movie was playing out in her head and completely dominated her conscious thought. However even that didn’t quite cover it, because it wasn’t like she was watching it. It had felt more like she was living it. She felt the sun beating down on the back of her neck as she stood on the side of the road; she smelt the huge pine tree that she had been standing so close to but more prominently the feelings that had surged through her felt so real.

She was hurt, at the time she had understood completely why. He had let slip why he had been interested in her, she looked exactly like his ex-girlfriend. After she found out she ran from the house and called Bonnie to come pick her up so she wouldn’t have to walk all the way back to town. She didn't see any of that but somehow she knew it.

Damon had followed her, which wasn't a surprise as he was much faster. While she was lost in the girl on the side of the road, the way her heart started pounding when she saw him and the butterflies that filled her stomach weren’t even acknowledged as they were normal. However now that she was herself again these feeling confounded her.

Even after she had been snapped back into reality the feeling lingered, whatever it had been that made the girl on the side of the road tell him not to go, stayed with her. When she looked at Damon she just wanted to pull his face to hers and kiss him.

Luckily she had been able to stop herself, it only took a second to mask what she was feeling. She replicated the confused look on Damon's face before that too disappeared.

Even though it felt like a great deal amount of time had gone by it had only been a couple of seconds. Stefan was still glaring at Damon and when she tried to talk to him he only stepped to the side to leave her path to the door unblocked.

Without another word or so much as a backwards glance she left. And now she couldn't stop trying to figure out what happened in the huge and beautiful house the two brother’s resided in.

Even after a night’s sleep the next morning it was all she could think about. She didn’t remember much about her dream but what she could recall was a pair of green eyes turning into flashing pale blue ones.

However it wasn't long before a distraction arrived at her door in the form of her best friend. With everything that had happened today Elena had completely forgot that she and Bonnie had promised to hand out programs for all the events that were happening tonight to celebrate the passing of the comet.
