Chapter Eleven
“I knew you would come around eventually,” Katherine said with a devious smile. Her brown eyes glittered in the light from the moon.
They had met exactly where she had told him about Elena after he finished hunting. Stefan hadn’t actually planned to go there but here was exactly where his feet had taken him. Once he was there Katherine had appeared almost instantly, and even though she was wearing designer jeans and a silk top with a fitted leather jacket she looked like she belonged in the forest just as much as she belong in a mall.
When she walked she had such grace about her and even in the highest heels she looked like a cat stalking its prey. Like the last time her hair fell down her back in curls and each curl was absolutely flawless.
Stefan raised his eyebrows at her comment and replied, “well it was either talk to you or sit there alone and think about what Elena might be doing with my brother right now.”
Damon had left hours ago and even though they didn’t exchange so much of a word he knew exactly where he was going. He and Elena had been spending all the time they possibly could together and Stefan was no idiot. However it still felt like someone had plunged their hand into his chest and was ripping out his heart every time he thought about it.
He had been so happy, that short time that he was with Elena. She made him feel human again, brought back emotions that he knew would keep him grounded, stop him from losing control. Everything about her from her kind eyes, heartwarming smile and gentle nature had made him smile for no apparent reason but now it just caused a deep aching that refused to go away.
It would have been so much easier if his brother had just stayed the heartless monster. The vampire who rolled into town killing everybody, and pretending not to feel a single thing. How was it possible that sweet, gentle Elena had fallen for him, if she hadn’t been wearing her vervain necklace when she told him he would have suspected compulsion. But he knew that either way that wasn’t a possibility, she never had the glazed look someone who was compelled had.
“So you did find out about sweet, innocent Elena and Damon. Bet that came as a shock,” Katherine said bluntly with a small smirk, “guess she’s a lot more like me than you thought...huh?”
“You’ve had your fun Katherine,” Stefan replied his voice hollow, it was easier to be detached. Easier to not think about how much Katherine looked like Elena, “the other day you said you wanted my help. Wanted to be allies.”
A smile lit up Katherine’s face but it was a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She asked, “been considering my little offer?”
“You’ve been alive for over a hundred years when you were supposed to be dead, a hundred years is a long time. Why did you never come back? When it was safe again for you, why did you never tell me or Damon that you were alive?” Stefan asked ignoring her question completely.
The smile was immediately wiped off her face and a scowl replaced it, “I do not wish to discuss matters from my past,” when Stefan continued gazing at her intently clearly waiting for an answer she sighed and said, “I didn’t go back to Damon because I didn’t want to. I always loved you more Stefan. And I know you’re going to ask why I stayed away from you as well. The answer is simple, it wasn’t safe.”
Stefan narrowed his eyes and asked, “what do you mean ‘it wasn’t safe?’”
Katherine tossed her hair over her shoulder and told him, “if you truly want the answer then you’re going to have to come with me.” She held out a slender hand, the nails perfectly manicured for him to take.
However he hesitated before grasping her hand, “why can you not explain here?”
“The woods outside your house do not offer much privacy and my story is a long one. Besides I am getting mud all over these shoes, which are new I might add.”
