"Mischief night," I repeat for what seemed like the hundredth time as I watched Stiles dig in his pockets.
Stiles groans, holding his flashlight through his teeth. "Yes, that is what I said five minutes ago."
I roll my eyes before I watch him pull out a key, sticking it into the door before pushing it open. "Of course you have a key to the school."
"I have a key to everything," he gloats, looking over his shoulder. I hike the duffle bag up higher on my shoulder as I follow him inside, hearing the doors slam shut behind us.
"I can't believe you got me up to do this," I sigh. He had practically shook me awake at freaking midnight to greet me with his nasty smelling breath, asking if I wanted to go on a night stroll or something like that. I thought he just needed a distraction from a nightmare he had, but little did I know that he wanted to break into the school and set up a prank.
Stiles snickers. "I can't believe you believed that I wanted to go on a night stroll."
"I thought you had another nightmare!" I practically shout as we step into the boys locker room.
He looks back at me, a smile no longer on his face. He doesn't say anything before turning back around, walking to his locker before opening it. I dropped the topic of his nightmares as I walked up behind him, dropping the duffle bag he had given me onto the ground.
"What about you?" Stiles asks me then, fishing through his locker for something I didn't know. "Have any other moments like you did in the car ride to school with Allison?"
I thought about telling him the time I saw Allison die next to me in her bed that night, but then I reconsidered. He had more to worry about than me; I didn't want to concern him. "No, nothing."
"That's weird," he says, grabbing something from the dark and sticking it into his pocket. "My nightmares are starting to become less frequent though, so maybe you're like me and we're starting to recover."
Hearing him say that made me wish it was true, but something told me that it was far from the truth. The truth right now was hiding away in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to lash out. I didn't want to know what that truth was, but I knew that I was going to get it one way or another.
"Maybe," I fade out, remembering what I had seen that day in the hospital after Jennifer had taken my sight. Like Deaton said, there was a darkness around our hearts and the nemeton would be a beacon again. Life can't get much easier for people like us. "What are you planning on doing here?"
"Every year we always prank Coach. We usually do something that he would never expect, but this year, I wanted to make it more obvious," he says, smiling before reaching down into the duffle bag, holding out a box. "I'm going to leave a box of nuts and bolts on his desk."
I raise my eyebrow as I cross my arms. "That's your big scheme? To leave a box on his desk?"
"Filled with nuts and bolts," he corrects me, lowering the box. "What, you don't think it's good?"
I shake my head. "I thought you were smarter than that."
"Oh wait, I forgot to mention the best part," he grins again, holding up a twine of string. "After he goes to pick up the box, it will trigger all of the objects we connect the string to to fall."
A smile forms on my face then. "That's the Stiles I know."
He laughs as he turns back around to shut his locker door, but when he turned back around to face me, something took me off guard. Either it was my eyes playing tricks on me or it was something else, but when Stiles had faced me again, his eyes were just empty sockets of darkness. I must have made a face and jumped backwards, because Stiles noticed.
