Brooke got up early the next morning. She heard her dad leave for work and her mom wouldn't be up for another hour and a half. She checked on her mom to make sure she was still asleep and then she snuck out to go for a walk. Brooke loved the crisp morning air and it helped clear her head a little bit. A stray cat peeked out of the bushes at her. She bent down. "Here kitty kitty. Aw you're so cute." The cat came out of the bushes to greet her and rubbed against her leg. It meowed at her and then went back into the bush. Brooke was about to walk away when she heard a little tiny mewl come from the bushes. "Ohhh you're a momma!" She exclaimed. Brooke peeked into the bush and saw five little kittens all nestled into a little bundle. She stood up and hurried back to her house. Her old cat had recently passed away so she still had some left over cat food. She took some tupperware that she hoped her mom wouldn't miss and filled it with canned cat food and mixed some kibble with it. She took another container and filled it with milk, then she hurried back to where the momma and her kittens were, pushing the containers up close to the mother, who looked at her appreciatively.

Brooke walked around the neighborhood for a while and then went back home to take a hot shower and get ready for school. Ugh...I am not feeling social today...She thought. She really didn't want to have to deal with anyone. It was a warm morning, so she knew it would be a hot day. Brooke decided to cover her scars with makeup so that she could wear a tank top. It was a grey one with a big dream catcher printed onto the front and the words Dream on printed in cursive underneath it. She tugged on a pair of pastel blue skinny jeans and her grey Birkenstocks and looked in the mirror. Not too bad, I guess...atleast you look presentable. She thought to herself. She smiled a little. That's the nicest thing I've ever told myself.

When she got to school, however, her self-esteem came crashing down. One of the popular girls, Bridgit Halloway, "accidentally" bumped in to her. "Whoops sor--what are you wearing Brooke?" She asked with a disgusted look on her face. Brooke clenched her jaw and walked away. "Hey wait!" Bridgit said trying to catch up. "What do you want Bridgit?" Brooke spat angrily. Bridgit rolled her eyes and sneered. "Just to give you some fashion advice sweetheart. Just don't wear Birkenstocks ok? You make them look absolutely repulsive. And 'Dream on'? Haha give me a break. None of your dreams are ever going to come true." Bridgit spun around laughing, her perfect hair bouncing around her perfect shoulders while she walked with a perfect hip swing that Brooke so wished she could somehow learn. She hated Bridgit, but she also hated herself for not being able to look like such a perfect human being.

Brooke didn't get lunch that day. She was too caught up in mentally beating herself down. She went to the hallway behind the band room where no one ever goes because it's so dusty and dirty. She wanted to be left alone. While she was sitting there, a figure appeared from around the corner. Great, Brook thought, more fashion advice from Bridgit. How does she always find me??? But it wasn't Bridgit. The figure almost walked past her and Brooke held her breath. It was dark in shadowy in the old unused hallway, so perhaps they wouldn't notice her. "Hey," the voice said. Brooke opened her eyes that she hadn't realized she had squeezed shut. "Oh...Hi Jasper, what are you doing here?" She said without much emotion. "I could as the same about you."

"Oh, just listening to music..."

"In a dirty hallway on the floor all by yourself?"

"Yep, favorite past time"

"You're strange you know that?"

"Thanks?"

"In a good way. Are you alright? You look like you've been crying."

"I'm fine..."

"No you're not. Come on talk to me."

Brooke sighed. "I'm just feeling antisocial today that's all." Jasper arched an eyebrow at her. "Just today? You seem antisocial all the time. The only thing you ever talk about is school work to other students except for me." Jasper pointed out. "Yeah well.." Brooke started to get uncomfortable. She didn't like opening up to people, especially those she didn't know that well. "Look, I just don't really like people and most people don't like me either, so I'd really rather just be left alone." She jammed her earbuds into her ears and told Jasper to go away. Jasper seemed like the only person who truly noticed the girl with the earbuds and the hair falling into her faraway eyes. He seemed like the only person who would understand. She felt really bad, but she wasn't ready to talk to anyone about anything. She never had before and she thought that it would be best for it to stay that way. That's the only way you can survive after all...
