Brooke went to school in a good mood. Her dad told her that he had some errands to run, so he would take her to her old school after work and let her visit with friends for a few hours. The first part of her day whizzed past. At lunch, she sat with Jasper and Jake. Jasper cracked jokes that made her laugh. He was talking about the ocean (he was a marine freak, as Brooke found out, much like herself.) When he got to talking about dolphins he said, "Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the edge of the pool and throw them fish?" Brooke snorted. Jasper looked at her. "What?" He said innocently. She shook her head and laughed. "Cheesy but funny," she said. "Cheesy!?" He scoffed. "The only thing cheesy is the pizza on your face!" Brooke looked down at her cheese pizza. Her face turned red with embarrassment as she wiped her face with a napkin. Jake and Jasper burst out laughing and Brooke grinned shyly. She threw a pen at him. "HEY!" He ran over and started tickling her. Brooke squealed and fell off her chair, laughing like a maniac. It's been a long time since I've had a good laugh, she thought. She wiped tears off her face and stood up. Jasper looked at her funny. "What? I'm not crying I swear!" She said, clutching her stomach and trying to catch her breath. He chuckled. "Nothing." Brooke stomped over to him. "What's so funny!?" Jasper looked at her straight in the eyes. "Your laugh is cute," He said smiling sheepishly. Brooke's face felt hot. "Pfffft. I laugh like a hyena!" She replied. "Nah," He extended his arm out for a hug and she complied.
While she was hugging him the realization hit her. "Shoot!" She said, smacking her forehead. "What'd you do this time?" Jasper Joked. Brooke scowled "Uhhhh... Well I'm going to my old school... Where my boyfriend goes... And I forgot about that." Jasper looked at her in confusion. "I'm going to break up with him, uh, because um... We haven't even talked in three weeks, and, uh yeah..." She said, feeling awkward. "Oh. Well good luck, baby girl" He said and walked out. Brooke's face, yet again, turned bright red. Jake looked at her. "Did he just say what I think he just said?" He asked, his mouth hanging open. Brooke mumbled something and got her things together for the next class. Baby girl? I'm hella confused now...But I am most definetely breaking up with my boyfriend! Stop calling him that!
After school, Brooke's dad took her to see her friends who were all happy to see her. "Hey guys! I'll be right back, I have some business to take care of with le boyfriend..." Her friends rolled their eyes. "Hey!" One of them called out, "girlfriends BEFORE boyfriends , remember???" Brooke waved them off and headed towards the band room. (He was in drum line and always practiced after school.) "Hey," she said when she saw him. "Hey babe!" He said and wrapped her in a hug. "Um, I need to talk to you..." She took a deep breath. "About what?" he asked. "Well first, um, can I ask you why you haven't texted or called me in 3 weeks?" She looked down at the ground, unable to make eye contact. "Sorry, I was just busy." He replied. She waited for something more, but he stayed silent. "That's it!? You were BUSY? Seriously?" Brooke glared at him. "Uh...yeah?" He said arching an eyebrow. Hot tears of hurt and anger threatened to spill down her cheeks. "What, does it take too much effort to pick up your phone every other day and say 'hey babe, busy but still thinking about ya!' Or maybe you could say 'hey can't talk for long , but everything alright?' Is it really that hard to pick up your damn phone and call to talk to me for five minutes?" She huffed and the tears streamed down her face. He looked a little bewildered and didn't say anything. "Fine, whatever. I'm done with your dumb excuses and I don't think I can do the long distance anymore, so bye..." She turned and walked away, feeling horrible and relieved at the same time. She told her friends what happened and they all went across the street to the drugstore to grab Pringles and chocolate, two of Brooke's favorite snacks. She told them about Jasper and what had happened earlier that day and they all fangirled over it. It made her smile that her friends were so supportive and happy for her.
Brooke's phone rang. It was her dad telling her he was waiting in the parking lot. When she hung up, a slip of paper fell out of her phone case. What the heck? It was a note from Jasper saying, "Text me when you find this" next to a phone number. She smiled and typed in the number furiously.
Brooke: Hey, It's Brooke! And btw I did it...
Jasper: Did what?
Brooke: I...broke up with him...
Jasper: Oh
Brooke: Yeah...
Jasper: GUESS WHAT
Brooke: What?
Jasper: Chicken butt
Brooke: Lol seriously?
Jasper: ....... I have a crush on you...
Brooke: Um, well, do you have a bandaid cuz I just scraped my knee falling for you.
Jasper: :) I like that one
Brooke: Yeah, me too xD
Brooke was blushing furiously when she got in the car with her dad, who gave her a strange look. "What's up with you?" He asked. Brooke tried to make her face straight. "Nothing," She said and turned her face away so he couldn't see her grinning. She hadn't been this happy in a long time!
