Through Wind and Storm

Chapter Five

As I stare into the flames and swallow my tears I shove all my thoughts to the side and focus on a game plan. How will I survive? I shuffle through thoughts in my mind, writing them all down on the rustic notepad I had found through all the debris. Even though half the pages are burnt off and completely destroyed, it works.

THINGS TO DO:

DO NOT PANIC

GATHER AS MUCH WOOD

BURY MOM, DAD, AND KASIE

RESCUE AS MUCH STUFF FROM THE PLANE AS POSSIBLE

BUILD A CIVILIZATION

HUNT

My writing gent's interrupted by a series of coughing. My heart begins to race. At first I'm scared, but the more I hear it, the more familiar it becomes. I start to go towards where I had laid my family's bodies, and sure enough, I see my mom with her fluttering eyes and her weak arms flailing.

"Mom!" I burst to tears as I help her up. She leans against my body, she's weak. I lay her on the ground as I clear a spot to put the blankets and pillows I have rescued on, and I now move her there. I look at her and close my eyes as more tears roll out.

"I'll be back, mom. I'm going to find us some food, shout if you need me. I love you." I say those last words strong and powerfully. I give her a hug and venture off through the trees. The sound of the crashing waves now fading into the rustling of the leaves.

The sights are beautiful. Dangerous, but beautiful. And for the first time, it attracts me. Yes, my plane crashed in the middle of who knows where. Yes, everyone but my mom and I died. And yes, I don't know anything about survival, but, according to history, the world started out like this. It's like a restart.

As I travel in a little more, I see beautiful, colorful trees line a little area near the shore. After picking a few berries and what's left of a squirrel carcass, I walk towards it. I come close to what I now know is the opening to a cave. I grab the flashlight I had managed to save from the crash and slowly creep in.
