"Please. I need to get home." I pleaded with the driver as he eyed cautiously. I didn't blame him. I hadn't had the chance to change my clothes and I was positive that my appearance was the main reason that he was hesitant to let me in. He ran his hand through his peppered mustache and balding head that revealed his olive skin tone as his honey brown eyes eyed me up and down.
"Look" I continued as I licked my chapped lips. " I'll pay you in cash. How much do you want."
"Fine. That's fifty bucks."
"W-what! Manhattan is about an hour in a half from here and there's no one on the bus!" I protested as I motioned my right arm to the empty blue seats in front of us.
"Either pay up or get out."
"Fine"I replied bitterly as I fished out fifty dollars and handed it to the driver. I made my way to the back of the bus and sat in the seat away from the window as I placed my crutches on the empty seat next to me.
I looked out the window as the sun shined brightly. It's a Saturday there would be no point in returning to school anyway. I closed my eyes momentarily until I heard a weak and elderly voice great me.
"Hello Scarlet" she replied sweetly.
I opened my eyes automatically and turned my had to the right. Past the isle that separated the two rows of seating a an elderly women of about 70 years old with white hair cut that reached up to her waist. She was dressed in a tattered black dress that had dry mud stains with a lavender cardigan over it. The woman appeared frail and malnourished but for some reason I couldn't feel any hint of malice as her thin pink lips curved upward. I stared at her deep dark brown eyes for what seemed like eternity as my heart beat against my chest rapidly.
"How do you know my name?" I asked as I grew more puzzled in confusion.
"Perhaps you don't remember who I am. But maybe you would like to know what happened to your friend, Laurel Lankford?"
