Brook, Nick and Judy drove down the highway towards Tundra Town. They sat quietly beside each other, Judy sitting in the middle seat, looking at the case file.
"So what's this catalog receipt for?"
Brook continued driving but glanced over at Judy for a moment.
"Do you notice how the purchases of children's products dramatically increases here?" From her previous purchases, it is evident that she did not have children. Now she does, and they are all around the age of five and six. Sound suspicious?"
"Sure, but is it even legal to hack someone's catalog account?" Nick gave her his best are you kidding me look.
"Of course not. But in this case, it's for a good cause." Brook swiveled her ears, "don't tell anybody though." She smirked and continued driving.
They drove into a snow covered parking lot where a few black SUV's stood.
"Mr. Big?" Judy's ears perked and they followed Brook into the dark mansion. "You know him?"
"Actually I do, considering that I had a very loose upbringing, I did a lot that I wanted to." Brook walked at a fair pace down the hall, in no obvious hurry.
"You worked for him too?" Judy asked as she looked over at Nick.
"Yep, but unlike Nick, I didn't leave with a bad reputation." Brook knocked on a big wooden door and poked her head inside.
"Mr. Big?" She entered the room where a tiny chair was placed on the desk and an Arctic shrew sat in it.
"Brooklyn, is that you?" He asked in his tiny raspy voice.
"Yes sir it is." Brook nodded her head at him.
"What can I do for you kid?"
"Well I'd like some help with a case I'm on. Do you know this wolf by any chance?" She showed him a printed picture of Holly Gibson.
"My guards have seen her around with two kids. Why?"
"Those kids have been missing for over four weeks now."
"Alright," Mr. Big stroked his tiny chin. "You want my men to catch her and bring her here?"
"If it's possible; yes. But don't harm the two boys."
Mr. Big agreed and sat back in his seat.
"How long has it been since you left? Two years?"
"Just about two years, yes." Brook nodded.
"Wow, that's a pretty long time," a voice echoed from down the hall. From out of the shadows a white cat with one blue and one green eye stepped out, wearing a black three piece suit and a white tie.
"Robin Tanner?" Brook cocked her head to the side and turned her ears toward him.
"Ya it's me; been a long time sweety, thought you'd never come back." He looked passed her, "and is that Nick Wilde? Hey old friend, it's been forever." He walked over to Nick and smiled. "What're you two doin' here together you predators, with a bunny?"
"We're on a case. I'm getting some help." Brook steered him away from looking at Judy, who looked like she was about to slap him.
"You? Get help? Honey, I think you've gotten soft." The white cat brushed his tail along her legs.
"If I give you a nice fist to the face, you can determine that." The black cat kicked his tail away from her.
"Fine then, I'll see you all later." Robin smiled and winked a blue eye at her and stalked back into the shadows.
"Anyway, Mr. Big, do we have a deal?" Brook smiled at the little rodent.
"Yes Kid we do. You give the guys a call and they'll do everything you say."
"Thank you sir, we'll be on our way now." Brook nodded to him and led the way out of the mansion.
When they had climbed back into the car, Nick huffed in an indignant way.
"What's the matter?"
"I always did hate him."
Brook smirked and drove out of the parking lot.
"You two never were good friends."
"Ya, he was always a gentleman with white angel fur and pretty eyes." Nick said, with a pouty look on his face.
"What's wrong, you have nice fur and eyes." Brook said.
"Sure but I can't lie as well as he - wait. Did you say I had nice fur and eyes?"
"No, I was talking about Robin," Brook smiled.
She turned to a big apartment complex. She parked and took another look at the case file. She got out and pulled a box from the back seat and headed up the stairs.
"Okay, what you guys are going to do is stand to the side where she can't see you, and I'm going to deliver this box to her as if I was any normal delivery guy. I already sent a text to the guys, so they're coming here to come and corner her in. Got it? Good let's go." Brook walked up the stairs and knocked on the door. She rang the doorbell a couple times, and heard rustling inside. She waited another minute, then the lock on the door turned.
"Yes?" A female voice from inside asked.
"Yes I have a box here for Holly Gibson? I'll need a signature." Brook looked at the peep hole, straining her ears to hear what was happening on the other side of the door.
The door cracked open, and a paw slipped out.
"May I see your face before I give it to you?" Brook held the box closer to herself.
"Can I just have the box please?" The voice was becoming desperate.
"If I see you first, then yes, you can have it." Brook kept in mind that the wolf was much larger than she was, and she had to keep her words careful.
Finally, the wolf opened the door, her ears laid back.
"Holly Gibson, yes?" Brook began writing on a signing paper.
"Yes, give me the box." She reached for the box, but the black cat stepped back.
"Actually, I'm detective Von-Locke, and you're under arrest for murder and kidnapping." She flashed her badge, and the polar bears from Mr. Big's forces stepped behind her.
"What? Murder? No!" Holly gasped.
"So you don't object to kidnapping? Good, I'll see for myself then."
A polar bear grabbed the wolf's paws and Judy handcuffed her.
"Anything you say or do can and will be used against you."
Brook went throughout the house, opening every door she found. She called the boys names, and a tiny squeak called back to her. She followed the sound, and discovered a locked door. She pushed on it, but it didn't give.
"Nick gimme a hand will you?"
The red fox trotted in and they pushed the door open.
A foul smell accompanied the room as the two little boys sat on a bed, one still sleeping, the other boy's eyes wide.
"We're here to take you guys home, everything's going to be okay." Brook reached for the one boy, but he snapped at her, his teeth bared. "It's okay we're not gonna hurt you. We're going to take you back to your mom. She misses you."
The wolf cub snapped at her again and shook his head, tears in his eyes.
"I can't tell Mommy."
"Tell her what?" Nick asked, bending down.
"I can't tell her he's gone." He turned to his brother, who laid still on the bed.
"Oh, Nick he's dead," Brook whispered. She gulped, fighting back the tears of failure and that she hadn't gotten to them soon enough.
The rest of the officers came in, and helped the little cub into a squad car. The other boy, they placed in a body bag.
"Do you need help in telling Ms. Butler?" Nick placed a paw on Brook's shoulder.
"No, I can do it. Just make sure that I can question Gibson when I get back. For now though, this case is solved."
"Will do, I hope everything goes alright." Nick gave her a small smile and joined Judy in a squad car nd drove off.
Brook left by herself and headed for the Rainforest Province.
