Nick and Brooklyn sat together in the treehouse, silent. The moon shone through the window, casting a silver glow over the couple's pointy ears.
Brook set her head on the fox's shoulder.
"We used to do this all the time."
"Ya, just sit here and contemplate life," Nick said sarcastically.
"It wasn't a bad thing," Brook sat up.
"Sure, but it didn't do any of us any good." He said and looked away.
"We were just kids."
"Ya, I guess."
They sat silently for a while longer.
"Why did you fix the treehouse?"
"I guess I wanted to relive the good old days; when everything seemed right." He said, staring at the opposite wall.
"When we could be as ignorant as we wanted and no one would question."
"Even then predators were put in a bad light," Nick turned away, his eyes becoming sad.
"Nick, you can't keep wallowing in your mistakes. Everyone makes them—"
"I'm not talking about that!" The fox put his head in his paws. "I'm talking about that night you found me muzzled and beaten." He was shaking.
Brook sighed and scooted to his side and put a paw on his arm.
"I'm sorry Nick—"
"You don't remember?" Nick shivered as the night got colder.
"I tried not to remember. Why would you want to?"
He shook his head, memories and insanity mixing into a bad combination.
"I don't know Brooklyn." He cried then, tears streaking his red fur.
The black cat wrapped her arms around her friend.
"You don't have to remember anymore. It's the past," she said.
"Would you say to forget it if I said I always loved you, since we were kids?"
Brook's green eyes widened, "no." She hugged him again, placing her head on his chest.
She had always believed Nick had thought of her as a friend, maybe a sister; never a lover. But now, the thought didn't seem horrible.
"I love you too," she said.
Nick embraced her, and they stayed that way.******
Weeks past and Nick and Brooklyn made more and more visits to the treehouse.
Judy couldn't help but notice a drastic change in Nick's behavior at work.
"Are you okay? You haven't exactly been yourself for the past few weeks."
"I know I'm sorry Carrots, it's just that I've met someone," he replied.
"You met someone? Who?" The bunny had a sneaking feeling about who it was.
"Oh just a cat," said the fox dreamily.
"I knew it!" Judy hopped up and down, her nose twitching in excitement. "It's Brook isn't it?"
"Yes Carrots," Nick sat down, a smile stuck on his face.
"Finally, I thought you'd never date her."
Nick chuckled and put his sunglasses on. Yes, finally.
