Now that you have had your bunny for a while, you may want to litter train him. It's very simple. At a pet store, in my case I went to a store called Tractor Supply, here locally and got two litter pans for ferrets. They can be used for rabbits too. They are called Litter Jon's.
When you set the litter pan up, you want to use a type of litter, I use shredded brown paper. Do NOT use Cedar shavings they cause respitory system problems. I avoid shavings at all costs. Below is a picture of the litter I use. I use it because it it economic friendly & non toxic if they eat it. Casjmere likes to eat it.
Rabbit urine is strong, however this soaks well, and eliminates odors.
While rabbits eat they tend to use the bathroom. So in the litter pan place your litter about 3/4ths of the litter pan, and in front of your extra part place some Timothy hay.
IIn the picture above you can see in the left bottom corner & right corner I've placed the pans. You want to place the pans in the most common used rest area of the cage. I built Casjmere's cage.
In order to get bun bun to use the pan, you may need to wipe up the urine he passes and place the paper towel or toilet paper you use in the pan. Any poop you pick up place in the litter pan. Bun bun will smell it, and know this is where he needs to potty.
It took me about 2 days to litter train Casjmere. However, rabbits differ. And don't become upset if bun bun has accidents. Just clean them up and place them into the pan.
Casjmere's litter pan
I should note that there are two types of rabbit poop. There are Pellet poop and cluster poop. The photo below shows you what they look like.
You should clean the litter pan every 3 days, and throw away any Hard droppings (pictured above.)
If you see any "grape clusters" also called Caecotrophs, do NOT throw these away, place them into a bowl for bun bun to eat.I know gross right? But truth is, rabbits eat half of their body weight, and their body doesn't digest all of the nutrients. The rabbit passes these clusters, which are extra nutrients and they are good for your rabbit! Let him eat them. It's as if the bunnys body is giving the rabbit a treat. You may not see many of them but when you do just leave them or move them to the food bowl.
Hard droppings are day poop, and Caecotrophs are night poop.
You may also see that your bun bun appears to be putting his head under his belly, and coming up and it looks like he is eating something. He is. He is eating his poop! But do not scold him.
NEVER scold your rabbit, they will become easily depressed because rabbits do not know why they are being scolded.
