"Hey Sans? Can I ask you a question?" signed Frisk, who was trotting along with Sans to the ice cream van at the bottom of the hill.
"Sure kiddo. Shoot." Sans replied.
"Why did you decide that we should go on a picnic?" Frisk questioned. Sans smiled.
"Well kid, we've both been through a lot recently. I think we both needed a break from things. And I know how much you enjoy picnics, so I thought it'd cheer us both up a bit." The skeleton answered. Frisk smiled happily.
"Well, today has made me very happy thanks to you. I'm very grateful!" Frisk signed with joy. They skipped along at Sans' side until they were at the bottom of the hill, and then the small child began to sprint towards the wondrous ice cream van. Sans chuckled and lazily strolled after them. He ordered a banana flavoured ice cream for himself, and a strawberry one for a very excited Frisk, who pretty much devoured their ice cream as soon as they could get their hands on it. Sans fearlessly bit into his frozen treat, which caused Frisk to cringe, and himself to chuckle. They began to make their way back up the grassy hill."So, uh, Frisk. I gotta talk to ya about something." Sans muttered. Frisk nodded happily and listened.
"Look kiddo. Chara isn't a nice person, and they never have been. I know they won't stop at anything to get what they want." Sans started. Frisk's smile fell at the mention of Chara. Sans patted their back reassuringly, and continued.
"They are most likely gonna go for one of us again in the future. I just want to let you be aware of this. I'm probably gonna tell Tori too. As much as it upsets her, she has to know." Frisk nodded sadly. The small child fiddled with their hands, until they thought of a question.
"Sans, is it stupid to show mercy to everybody?"
Sans stopped walking for a moment and glanced at Frisk. He sighed.
"Honestly? I don't know kiddo. I have mixed feelings about all of this. But I can clearly say this. People that are as horrible as Chara don't deserve mercy. They don't deserve forgiveness. They don't deserve love. And I mean both kinds of love here, kid."
"I think Chara deserves mercy." Frisk stated. Sans' soul ached with love and upset for the kid.
"Why kiddo? Why would something, or someone, as demented and as awful as Chara deserve something like mercy?"
Frisk didn't reply, and Sans continued.
"Do you think that there's some good in them? Do you really believe that anybody could be a good person if they just try? There's so many horrible people out there Frisk, and Chara's the worst. They -"
"Yes. I do believe that. I do think there's still some goodness in Chara." Frisk interrupted Sans, and left him staring at Frisk in shock. Sans could only say one word.
"...Why?"
"I believe that there's a reason why Chara is acting this way. If I could talk to them, and see what's wrong, then maybe I could understand what they are feeling, and why they are feeling this way. Maybe I could help them." Frisk signed hopefully. Sans looked down at the ground sadly.
"God kid, you're too soft. You're gonna get yourself killed, I swear." He mumbled.
"I suppose so. But it's a risk I'm willing to take, if I ever see Chara again." Frisk firmly signed. "Sans, I'll try not to break our promise...and even if I do die, I won't truly reset. I'll make sure to create a save point beforehand." Sans stayed silent.
"Sans. Please trust me on this." Frisk pleaded. Sans sighed unhappily.
"Kiddo, this is a bad idea. But okay, I'll trust you. But the next time you see Chara, you text me, alright?" Sans asked. Frisk nodded happily and held the skeleton's hand. Sans weakly smiled and walked with Frisk to the top of the hill, where the picnic was taking place."Sans! You've took forever! We've been waiting for ages!" Undyne exclaimed unhappily, and Papyrus grumbled in agreement. Toriel shook her head in amusement and patted beside her for Sans to sit down. The others ran off to play a game of football, and Sans, Toriel and Asgore were left sitting together. Sans sighed.
"Look you two, I've got something to tell ya." He began. Toriel and Asgore could tell it wasn't going to be good news, and waited in anticipation.
"Chances are, Chara's gonna come back again for either me of Frisk, and I wanted you both to be aware of that." Sans also continued to explain about Frisk's ability to reset, Frisk's opinions and their 'plan', and both parents listened anxiously.
"Well, that's it." Sans finished.
"That's it?! Are you insane Sans?! I will not allow my child to do such a thing!" Toriel cried. Asgore looked down solemnly, and held Toriel's hand in order to get her attention.
"Look, Tori... We know how the resetting program works, Chara could do it anyways, before they passed away. It's a good thing that Frisk can do this too. I think that we should let them carry out their plan. I know it's upsetting, but Frisk contains more determination than Chara does. They'll be able to load their save and come back to us if something happens to them. Trust our child, Tori." Asgore gently advised. Toriel listened, and reluctantly agreed.
"Right, well I'll let Frisk know of our decision to support them when we are alone." Toriel sighed worryingly, and Sans smiled at her.
"Well done Tori. They'll never be happier.".
