"Who needs them?"

- -

It was the sad truth of not really having anyone to rely on, so, what did you do during your whole life? Well, you've lived normally without the friendship part.

Having good grades and good looks, with your vibrant [eye color] eyes, and dewy [skin color] skin, made boys fawn over you throughout the years. You just brushed them off and never really liked anyone.

What about family? It was only your mother and you. Your mom was a neurosurgeon, so she doesn't come home often / comes home very late. You never knew who your father was, not a single detail. Whenever you asked your mom about him, she would simply say, "you will never know about him." His current status is unknown which bugged you for many years until you started to forget that you even had a father.

Having no close friends seemed unreal, but there was that one boy whom you'll never forget.

Ironically, you forgot his name, location, contact (if there was contact information), and majorly, his letters sent to you. They were lost in your room somewhere or somewhere. There was so point to look anymore since it's been years and the hollowness in your heart moved on.

"Well, memories will always stay is what's... Important."

It's been a very long time, so there's a high probability that he forgot about you too.

But that feeling of connection was a lovely and temporary feeling to experience, even if it meant never seeing or meeting each other.

"Oh well, it never lasts." You shrugged it off and started to lean against your desk's chair dazing off into memory lane.

A candle flame that burned out.

It all started with the late spring of April, during the last year of elementary... (Sixth year)

[ Flashback ]

"Alright class, today we will be writing to another school in Tokyo far away. The people you will write to are a few grades older. They will be your pen pal! Unfortunately, our school had some business issues, so we couldn't connect with any international schools. Luckily, we only could afford to get in contact with a far away school here in Tokyo, called ______. The students there wrote to us first, so we must write back to them. The thins is, you will get a random person which is the fun of it: boy or girl, just be yourself and not to slip out personal info until you get to know each other."

Your classmates began to chatter a bit with excitement. It was so thrilling to write back and fourth to an older person, assuming they are a junior high student.

"Boy? Girl? I can't wait!!" Thoughts were racing through your mind that you couldn't wait any longer.

Each of your classmates, including you, were handed an envelop to open by the male teacher. The envelops were completely white with identical stamps from behind to keep them anonymous. And for the "fun".

You opened the envelop sticking your finger in the fold, sliding it with the soft ripping sound, along with several students opening it, definitely not in sync. The letter was neatly folded horizontally into three rectangles, so you unfolded the paper.

Skimming through the letter, you noticed that the person's handwriting was neat and readable so you immediately started to read.

" Unknown Date
Dear pen-pal, my name is um _____ _____, and I'm a boy. It doesn't matter if you're uh, a g-girl because I'm okay with g-girls... I think... I'll start with talking about myself.. My father died when I was very young or before I was born.. And recently, my mother passed away too, so it's been really hard for me. S-She died from overworking herself. My best friend has stayed with me through thick and thin... It hurts a lot, but everything will be okay in the end.... Right? Anyways.. I love reading. My father left me his collection of books, and I happened to stumble upon one of them and continued from there. Do you love books? I hope you write back to me soon, he.... Or s-she!
- _____  _____"

After reading it, you honestly couldn't wait to reply back. He sounded so shy and adorable.

You wrote back saying a lot of things relevant to your life as well as introducing yourself. The letter included a variety of questions, such as: "______-kun what do you want to be when you grow up?" "Do you have anyone you like?" And all sorts of stuff.

The teacher hands out fresh envelops to everyone explaining the obvious.

- -

After completing the reply letter, you folded it neatly into three rectangles, placed it inside the clean envelope, and moved it aside for the teacher to collect afterwards. Even though you knew it will take just a few weeks for the letter to arrive and back, your patience is patient and you will never stop being thrilled-

"Ne ne, [Your name]-chan" giggled a group of three girls.

One of them had short brown hair reaching their shoulders with chestnut brown eyes. The other girl had her bright blonde hair in a bun with her noticeable sea green eyes. She was the tallest out of the three. Lastly, the girl with bags covering her forehead had hair as dark as night without stars, reaching her waist with her almond shaped eyes, and dark brown colored eyes. She was the adolescent definition of a kireina josei (きれいな 女性).

The sea green eyed girl gleamed with inquiry beginning to open her mouth.

"Is your pen-pal a boy or a girl? We all got girls who definitely sound beautiful and probably popular!"

"I got a boy." You stoically replied.

The girl with short hair interrupted in the conversation, happily blabbing.

"You're so lucky! If I had one, maybe it would be fate or something. Kyaaaa~ having an onee-san as a pen-pal could be really fun, she could give me advice, boy secrets, even-" It was getting annoying, so you stopped listening and plastered a fake smile while nodding along.

Weeks passed and it was the second last week of May. Today, the letters should be here. You were more excited than most of your classmates because an 11 year old girl finally had a "friend". But why did you find him interesting? Maybe because you wanted to know more about this person? Who knows? You just couldn't wait to receive the letter back.

Upon entering your classroom, you came a little later than you expected since you wanted to receive the letter right away.

- -

The teacher passed down each directed letter in order, which you received yours first, hence sitting in the first row, of the first seat.

Slowly and cautiously opening it, you took out the letter and started to read it.
