"What are you doing?" Father asks impatiently, slurring ever so slightly so that I know he's drunk.

"Nothing." I reply as sweetly and innocently as I can to keep his mood in it's better stage.

"Huh. Like I believe that. You did nothing all those years ago but look how that turned out." he spits out at me, referring to my mother.

I'm silent. I can't say anything, but either way, I don't have anything to say.

"WELL?!" Father screams at me while unsteadily walking to the bed.

I stay silent. I move closer to the wall behind me, trying to put some distance in between us.

"DON'T MOVE BACK YOU COWARD!" he screams while yanking my hair towards him, "FUCKING COWARD THAT YOU ARE! YOU DISGUST ME! AT LEAST DO SOMETHING!"

I'm pinching my face at the pain, but I don't necessarily do anything.

"I have to go to school." I say to him.

He angrily lets go and glances at the clock, which reads 8 in the morning. Since he started his morning drinking, he doesn't realize that school is over for the summer. It's early August. I've been tricking him every week this summer into believing I'm at school.

He doesn't care. He never did.

He wearily walks out and I follow behind him after getting dressed. I slip on my turtleneck-long-sleeved black shirt with my pair of skinny jeans, and walk out the door. I grab my backpack by the door, slip on my shoes, and tell my dad I love him, before slipping out the door and along the cracked pavements of the alleyways.
