Carl opened his eyes to find himself in his cell. He sat up disoriented until he figured that he must've fallen asleep, and his dad found him and brought him here. It felt weird without you waking him up like you usually would.
Carl looked over at his little desk area, staring at the stack of comics like he would at his mothers grave. He couldn't help but think about you. He could pretend it was all a dream, but his aching knuckles told him otherwise.
But staring at those comic books gave Carl an idea. He got up, got changed, and searched through the stack, pulling one out from the middle. Your favorite. Then he pulled out a few more: his favorite and some new ones from Michonne. He attached a note, then wrapped it all up with some twine picked up on a run, and placed it in his hat. Then he carried the makeshift gift basket to the cell bloc door, banging on it loudly to get Hershel's attention.
Hershel appeared at the door, looking down sadly at the lovesick teenage boy. "Before you tell me to leave, at least hear me out first," Carl told him.
"What is it, son?"
"Could you give this to Y/n? Please." Hershel looked at Carl for a little while longer before nodding. He treated you as if you were his own daughter, just like Glenn as his own son. He knew this would make you happy, and he wanted nothing more for you than just that.
"Leave it by the door and leave. I'll pick it up once you're a safe distance away."
Carl breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
"I think I speak for her when I say thank you." Carl smiled at the old man and did as he instructed, walking away and turning the corner, but waiting, listening to the door open and close again.
You sat up when you saw Hershel opening up you and Lizzie's shared cell. He was holding a hat, one that was unmistakably Carl's.
"He wanted me to make sure and give this to you." Hershel then handed it to you and you untied the twine, recognizing the comics inside. You would read the note later.
"Tell him I said thank you," you say to Hershel.
The old man smiled. "I already did." He closed the cell door once more and left. You spread the comics out on the bed and placed Carl's hat on top of your head. It still smelled like him. You took the folded note and unraveled it, reading the written words.
Y/n,
I know that I promised not to come, but I feel that I should still keep you company, maybe not in person, but hopefully these comics can do that for me. I know you can pull through this. Daryl and the others should be back soon with medicine. If you miss me, just wear the hat. Stay safe, be strong, and pull through. I love you.
~ CarlYou read it a few more times, savoring the sweet words. You held the paper close, and whispered, "I love you, too," as if he could actually hear you. You read the comics and wore the hat, and when the medicine finally came, you were immediately treated, and were well again in a few days. You were released with your comics and Carl's hat, and the first place you went was to the section of hallway Carl was guarding.
You turned the corner, setting down the stash of comics on the ground, the hat still on your head, softly calling out his name.
"Carl? Carl?"
Around the corner, Carl froze. He didn't know if hearing your voice was real, or if he was starting to hear things. With his gun in his hands, he turned the corner, his whole face lighting up.
"Y/n!" Then you both ran to each other, meeting in the middle in a large, bone crushing hug. "You're okay," he breathed into your hair.
"Never better." You both pulled back enough to where your foreheads touched. "I missed you so much."
"Me too." He looked at my head. "My hat looks pretty good on you."
You laughed, suddenly kissing him. You didn't know why you just did, but it was worth it. And the best part was that he kissed you back.
"I love you. I love you so much," Carl breathed, looking at his beautiful, healthy best friend, now hopefully girlfriend.
You couldn't help but smile. "I love you, too. And before you ask, my answer is yes." Carl laughed.
A love like this could never be quarantined.
Originally I was going to have you die, but I'm a nice person, plus I like this ending better. Carl has been through too much already to have that thrown at him.
Thanks for reading this far and giving these one-shots a chance. Requests are appreciated, as well as votes and comments. Thanks so much!
