Chapter 2: Pandemonium

"The hollow black litter shells crunched into the ground like the skin of a cicada. This is all that's left, and you can do whatever you want with it. Keep it to yourself or let it serve as a warning"

Olivia's body was on overdrive. She took turns left and right until she saw the magnificent double doors of the institute. Olivia pushed open the institute's doors and stepped into the cool dark night.

Her shoes hit the pavement of the institute. She tore open the gates and sprinted across the street. Olivia looked for a taxi but found none. She ran faster. If Jace found out she was gone he would surely go after her. And Olivia could not have that. She already had two brothers, they're aren't flesh and blood like Jace claims to be, but her best friends. And Olivia always thought that family didn't end with blood.

Jace wanted Olivia to stay in the Institute until tomorrow, so they can prove that Jace was her brother and that she was Shadowhunter. A Nephilim. They would bring a warlock named Magnus Bane over to cast a spell to show that Jace and Olivia were truly related. But Olivia didn't care if she was Jace's sister or not. She wanted to go home and never see the Institute ever again. She wanted to slap Jace across the face and tell him that she didn't care that they were siblings, he wasn't her brother and never will be.

Olivia turned the corner and saw the urban streets and the sidewalks filled with people. New York City was always buzzing with life, no matter what time it is. Olivia's heart leaped in joy. Olivia ran further up. She bumped into people and mumbled apologies to all of them but kept on her course. Olivia's legs began to burn but she forced her legs to keep going until she got to the all-ages club, The Pandemonium.

Olivia pretended to wait in line and took out her phone. She dialed one of her best friends - her brother's, number in haste.

It rang three times until he answered.

'Olivia, I was asleep.' Scott's voice was thick and raspy and annoyed.

'Scott! I need help.' Olivia spoke hastily, 'Pick me up at the Pandemonium.'

'Olivia, what happened?' Scott no longer sounded annoyed but concerned for his best friend's well-being. 'I told you not to go to that freaky club anymore!'

'Scott, please, just get here!' Olivia said in haste looking up and down the sidewalk afraid she might see one of the Nephilim.

'Alright, I'm on my way. Don't talk to anyone.' Scott hanged up and Olivia, as she got out of line, kept her phone in her hands.

Olivia started shivering. At that moment Olivia finally noticed that it was freezing, and she only has her flannel to keep her warm. It was October, after all. She hugged herself to keep warm, but the action did very little to help.

Olivia closed her eyes and saw flashes of Jace, Isabelle, and Clary. They explained it all to her. How the Nephilim were made, how she was not a mundane but a Shadowhunter, like them. Olivia believed it all, the crazy story about Raziel and his blood making the Nephilim; up until they stated that she was one of them. She could believe that the world is a far stranger place than she could've ever possibly imagined, but that was too much. Olivia was not one of them, Olivia was not Jace's sister. She was not a Herondale, she was a Stein.

Olivia pushed them out of her mind. She refused to think about them, she was normal; ordinary.

'My name is Olivia Cecily Stein, not Olivia Cecily Herondale.' Olivia thought to herself repeatedly.
