That sound. A hollow thump eminating from somewhere behind me. Followed quickly by two clicks. The room around me got darker and then I realized. Those sounds. The sound of a wooden door shutting and a padlock closing.
I knew what I was doing...at first. And then I understood. Task 1. A thought formed in my mind that I couldn't get out...one that was probably true. Of course they're not going to test my psychic skills! They can just ask my teachers about those. They're going to test me. What I can do alone...by myself. After all I can't see my future so that seems the obvious choice. My hand started shaking as I slowly started placing on foot after another. There was a prickling on the back of my neck...as though there was something just in the shadows, the ominous darkness that I could not see. The stair case seemed infinite although I felt like I was getting closer to what must have been the bottom. The flashlight didn't travel far but it was enough to direct myself and I guess that was the point. Then the floor flattened. But I wasn't at the bottom...not yet...not quite. A door loomed to my right where as the stairs continued further down the path ahead of me. I knew what I should do but I also knew what I wanted to do. I was told to go down the stairs. But the door seemed to offer a sense of comfort. Like the peace and normality of everyday life was sitting right behind it in that tattered shoebox everyone kept under their bed. Decisions decisions.
