--------------------------------

I slowly walk down the stairs, hugging my stuffed teddy Gerald to my chest, following the hushed whispers coming from the living room.

"We can't stay, you know they'll find us," my mummy whispers, as if she's been crying.

"We can't just leave her! We don't even know what will happen."

"Mummy? Daddy?" My tired 6 year old self tiredly stumbles through the door way, rubbing my eyes as I squint up at them.

"Oh, my little doll, why are you out of bed?" She smiles softly, walking over and picking me up holding me on her hip.

I giggle at how she calls me her doll, like the ones from Toy Story.

"I can't sleep, scary dream." I mumble, tucking my head into her chest, holding Gerald even tighter against me.

"About the wolves?" My mummy asks worriedly.

I nod in response, trying to get closer to her for protection.

"We can't leave now, Marie. Not like this." I hear my daddy walk over to us, feeling him place a warm, comforting hand on my back.

"I know," mummy mumbles, pulling me closer to her chest. I can feel my eyes getting heavier, my mind slowly going off to dream land.

"When we know what she is," I hear mummy whisper soothingly, "then we know whether to take her, or run."

"Run."

"RUN!"

"NO!" I yell out, sitting up abruptly from the bed trying to catch my breath.

Sweat coats my forehead, as I feel fresh tears slipping down my face.

"Andy, are you okay?"

Images flash in front of my eyes, too fast to keep up.

"RUN!" My mother's voice rings through my head loudly.

I hear my father's sobs, me crying for them to come back, my mother's eyes turning black.

"No! Stop!" I cry out as I grab my head, holding it between my legs, trying to stop the images.

"Andy!"

I gasp as the images abruptly stop. Everything goes silent, only my heavy breathing echoing through the dark.

Only now am I aware of warm, firm arms holding me to an even warmer, stronger chest, and a soothing hand stroking my hair.

"Andy," I hear Aiden breathe out, "it's okay, I'm here, I'll protect you." I hear him promise softly, pulling me into him more.

That does it.

Tears explode out of my eyes as I begin crying, like full on crying with ugly face, and snot, and everything.

I wrap my arms around his neck as I pull my face into his chest, clinging to him for comfort and support.

Something about him saying that he'll be there for me, he'll protect me, helps release the sadness and anger I hold about my parents not being the one to promise that to me.
