Layla
SOMETIMES, you wake up and you just know that your day is gonna suck ass.
Maybe it's something in the air or the way you fell asleep the other night.
Other times it's when you wake up and hear the morning A'than blaring early in the morning.
And hearing the A'than blaring early in the morning is not a nice way to start off your day.
"Nadira," I groaned into my pillow, slamming two fluffy pillows on either side of my face. "Do you have to pray before sunrise? Do you have to make me suffer everyday?"
I sat up in bed cursing Nadira under my breath and mentally counting down the days she had left before she moved out.
It was just last month that she was proposed to by Aweis.
Well --- not on one knee proposed. More like knocking on her parents door and asking for their daughter's hand in marriage proposed.
Kaylah and I were shocked to say the least. Not because she's getting married but because she's married with a Somali man.
Nadira always talked smack about Somali men. "They're lazy, ungrateful, and always looking for woman outside their ethnicity because they think they're better than us." She'd always rant every time we brought up the discussion of marriage.
Growing up in the land of 10,000 lakes I was always used to hearing Somali men bashing on Somali women and vice versa.
At the end of the day however, they still settled down with each other.
Walking outside to my balcony I sat down, my skin instantly tingling and a rush of blood flowed through my body by the contact of my warm skin and the cold chair.
The cold harsh breeze reminded me of home, except home didn't have the deafening sounds of the millions of humans in New York City.
On the bright side, the early morning looked beautiful.
The Sun was slowly peeking through the horizon. His rays were winking between skyscrapers and buildings.
The warm sunlight kissed my skin and the early morning dew was already beginning to coil around the city.
It was a sight to behold.
Nadira must've noticed too as she sat on the chair beside me. Her curly hair was wet from wu'du, her eyes shifting from brown to gold under the sunlight.
"Here," the corners of her lips curled into her signature smirk as she handed me Shaax.
"Thanks," I beamed at her, encircling my hands around the warm mug as I looked at the view again. "You should hurry up and pray. The sun is about to rise."
"I just finished," laying her head on one of my satin covered pillows she looked up at me through her black curls. "I'd rather hear about how your date went with Mr. Perfect."
"Ugh," Taking a sip of the tea as she chuckled next to me. "Mr. Perfect was an ass. All he did was talk about himself and his," I sat up straight pretending to fix up a tie as I mocked him. "Prestigious job at Apple."
Nadira laughed as she threw her pillow at me. "Shut up. Kaylah went through hell to get you a date with him," I stuck my tongue out at her as she kicked me "And he was pretty hot."
Mocking her I placed my hand on my chest and said, "Lower your gaze, Nadira! I don't think your new hubby would appreciate you eyeing on someone else."
