My hands were cuffed to the bench on the bus, and I was sweating profusely. Looking to my right, I could tell Leo and Jason were damp too. The officer at the front of the bus kept wiping his forehead off with a handkerchief. A handkerchief! No one uses those anymore!
I looked back at the officer, "Sir, could we possibly turn up the AC?"
"Yeh!" Leo added, "I can't maintain the signature Leo hairstyle with all this humidity bogging it down!"
"Delinquents. That's what the lot of you are."
I glanced around the nearly empty bus. There was the bus driver, who has, so far, only mumbled a greeting to the officer as we borded the bus. Then there was the officer himself, rubbing his red face with the hankie, brown hair plastered to his face. Finally, there was Jason, Leo and me, all handcuffed up, side by side on a bench.
"I wouldn't really call us a lot sir, I think we're more of a trio. Like the three musketeers." I smiled at him, getting a glare in return.
Just then we hit a hole in the road, throwing all of us around. My head hit Leo's, who then crashed into Jason. Startled, he fell off the bench, only to have his arm yanked by the handcuffs, which restrained him to it.
"Gods above," he muttered, staring upwards. He clambered back onto the bench, and we continued the ride of doom.
Leo finally broke the silence, "Hey! Mr. Security Dude!" The man gave Leo a look that could kill, "You know there are a bunch of holes outside, right?"
I jerked my head up to look out the dusty windows, and I jumped a little. Leo was right, thousands of holes dotted the landscape in scary uniformity. The dusty canyon thing was blemished with them as far as the eye could see. Maybe some giant snakes liked to make burrows here. Maybe they were blue snakes.
"Um, sir?" Jason spoke up for the first time,"If this is called Camp Green Lake, then why haven't we seen anything green for over two hours. I-I mean, if-if you don't mind me a-asking." He stuttered.
"I do mind."
About five minutes after that short exchange, a few buildings came into view.
The security guard - I mean officer. He has been very quick to correct us on that - stood up, the keys on his belt jingling. "Welcome," he said gruffly, "to Camp Green Lake."
"He must be joking!" Leo mock whispered, "Or else he's horribly color blind. All I see is dirt, dust, and tumbleweeds. It must never rain here!"
The bus came to a jerky stop, and I craned my neck to stare out the window behind me, trying to make out the shapes of the buildings.
Then came a bang. I glanced at Jason, over Leo's head, and mouthed, 'gunshots?' He nodded. Leo's eyes widened. I don't think I really want to be here any more, even if it does mean ditching my quest.Hey everyone! Short into for my new fanfic. Yes, it doesn't have an official name quite yet, but it will! Hopefully soon. Also, the picture on the cover along with this story idea was drawn/thought up by TheCottonProject on Tumblr!
