Dear Connor,
I feel proud, but not so proud at the same time.
During the summer, I felt a bit suffocated, but video chatting with you made it a little better. I wanted to forget your face completely, but it was like ending my own life with a knife.
For me, that was very hard.
When we returned to school, Chinese school began too. Originally, we were both in the 7th grade class, albeit I was actually in 6th grade in American school. However, I had skipped a grade while you did not.
But this year was different. You had skipped a grade too, and while you would be advancing to 9th grade, the last year of Chinese school before you graduated, I would be staying behind in 8th.
I finally managed to go a few weeks without having anything to do with you, thanks to our separate schedules.
Sure, in volleyball class, where we both moved to the advanced class (even though you must've been ten times better than me) I did take the occasional glance at you, only to find you laughing with your friends and serving and passing like a pro.
The way your eyes crinkled when you smiled, when you did the slightest hair flip after acing a serve, the way you dived onto the floor to save the ball with your quick reflexes...
Okay fine, maybe I glanced over more than occasionally.
Should I have been proud that I was actually able to let you go, even for the smallest time period?
No, I don't think so.
But for once, I felt like I could breathe.
Breathe without the burdens of heartbreak on my back, weighing me down.
Lost in my thoughts,
Rose
