Chapter 16- running blood

Me and King had our stuff packed up as we're ready to hit the desert.

The walk was long but King's company encouraged me. I had to keep him safe.

The snow began to thin and melt which signalled that we were close to the forest.

I could feel Kings icy hand began to twitch in mine

"What's up?" I asked him.

"I'm scared of the bad guys" he squeaked

"We can fight them , easy no problem...."

I knew I was lying.

I don't know what would happen if I bumped into a career.

"King we're gonna try run through this forest as fast as we can, hopefully they won't spot us"

The trees began to build up so I knew we were there.

I used all the strength I had to smile up to King.

"Aubrey, do you love me?" He asked

I let out a half laugh

"Yes king, I supposed I do love you"

"Like what ?" he asked

"Like a brother" I said.

We both took our first step into the forest. twigs cracked beneath my feet making tiny snapping noises.

"Lets run ok?"

We both broke out into a run, the twigs beneath us made our footsteps loud. if the Careers can't hear us then try must be deaf.

I slipped an arrows Over my shoulder and into my bow ready.

"Nice weapon"

That wasn't king.

I looked up to see a girl with a knife running along side me.

One if the careers, her name I didn't know.

She tried to stab me I ducked and swerved around a tree.

She already infront of me again. too close to fire an arrow at.

Adrenaline pumped through my veins.

I tried to stab her with my arrow but she dodged. she ran a bit further and tossed the knife back at me.

It nearly hit me but I caught it instead.

I caught it at the sharp end.

Blood ran down my wrist but I ignored it.

"hey over here" cheered the girl waving

In one quick movement I aimed an arrow and shot it.

She screamed.

The arrow had gone through her arm and into the tree, pinning her too it.

It was a horrible sight. but I needed if I didn't act quickly she could pull it out.

I rand forward and place the knife to her chest.

"Please. no. I'm sorry. i'll. i'll be your.. alli? She stammered.

"I'm sorry"

I closed my eyes and plunged the knife in with both hands. I felt her blood pour down my hand , running into my own.

I turned around before opening them again. I did not want to see.

"KING!" I screamed

"Brree" his voice was little more than a whisper

"In coming"

I ran in the direction of his voice. til I found him curled up I'm a net

"King!" I said

"He caught me then he heard the scream and left me" he stammered

"It's ok I'm here now, are you hurt " I said untangling the net

"No just scared"

I freed him.

"Quick we have to get out of here"

I pulled him up ad we began to run. my hand still pouring blood.
