"Would you like to come and train as a sage on the mountain?" the old frog asks Naruto. "Will I be able to defeat Pein that way," the frog nods his head. "Tsunade, would you mind," she shakes her head. "What about you Hono?" Naruto asks. I look at him and cock my head in question. "Are you gonna train as a sage? You can even come with me!" he exclaims. "Naruto, I can't become a toad sage because I don't summon toads, I summon the phoenix," I explain. "So are you Tatsuo's pupil?" the toad asks. "Yes," I say unsure. "I know he would enjoy teaching you they way of the sage. He and I are friends and if anything happens, I can contact him and he can contact me," he assures me. "In fact I'll contact him now and bring him here!" he says. The toad stares off into space for a minute before snapping back into reality. "He's coming," he informs.
A bright red light forms outside the window. We all turn and watch Tatsuo appear. He has bright red feathers with golden flakes and piercing yellow eyes. "You called, Fukasaku?" he asks in a deep voice. The toad smiles. "Would you be willing to teach your pupil the art of being a sage?" Tatsuo looks at me and then at Naruto, then at Fukasaku. "This is sudden, why do you wish to learn?" he asks.
"So I can fight along side of Naruto against Pein when it comes time," I say determined. Tatsuo-sensei laughs heartily. "I guess I will then. Hono, come," he beckons me outside the window. I go behind Tsunade. "Hey wai-" I slide open the window and jump on to the beak of my sensei. "Naruto, I'll see you again soon," I smile at him. He waves at me, "When I come back I'll be ten times stronger than you, Believe it!" I laugh as Tatsuo-sensei surrounds us in fire and transport us to the land of the Phoenix.
Lush greenery covers the area on the tropical island. An active volcano sits in the center of the large island, where only Phoenix and Moyasu have been. Phoenix fly free over head as sun rises along the horizon. I have never been here in person so I sit down on Tatsuo's beak and stare in wonder and the warm colors of the sky, "It's so pretty here," I speak. He laughs a little, "That's right, this is your first time here! Since you haven't had breakfast yet, we can go to Homura's house and eat," An image of a smaller yellow bird with maroon eyes with orange flecks in them appears in my mind. I hold on to Tatsuo's beak as we fly across the island.
We land in front of a black dome-like nest. Upon closer inspection, I find the material that makes up the nest is lava rock. I follow Tatsuo in the large opening and spot Homura. "Tatsuo-sensei, you're just in time fo- Hono? I didn't know you were coming!" Homura says frantically as she she sets down plate of fire? "I guess you can't eat fire so we'll have to figure something out," Tatsuo says.
I nod, "Is there any wild animals on the island?" I ask. "Yeah, lots of small birds. If you catch a wild chicken, I'll cook it for you!" Homura offers. I smile and nod. I go exploring the island and search for food. I stumble upon a few birds flying in the sky. I quickly grab ahold three kunai and throw them at each bird. One by one the birds fall to the ground. I remove the kunai and bring the birds back to Homura. "Would you like me to defeather?" I offer. "No, No dear, that won't be necessary," She proceeds to breath fire out of her mouth and on to the three birds.
When the fire clears, the three birds are charred black. She hand them to me and smiles. I grin and try not to stare to long at the birds' beady eyes. I quickly eat and get it over with. I didn't taste anything. I didn't even feel a bone in there. Not complaining about that. I sit back and watch as they swallow the fire. I cab't help but cringe as I see a light inside of them. "Soon, you'll be able to eat fire with us," Homura smiles. My eyes widen. Fire? I will be able to eat fire?! Not complaining.
"Alright, I guess we should start training," Tatsuo says as he puts his plate on top of Homura's. I nod. "Get on," I climb on his back and he take us to the bottom of the volcano. "Run full speed up this volcano using no chakra," he says bluntly. "What?" I ask in disbelief. "You heard me," he smirks. I sigh as I start running up the steep incline.
Ten minutes in and I'm out of breath. "Don't stop now! Keep going!" Tatsuo bellows. "Easier said then done," I mutter. "Was that an excuse I just heard?" he smirks. "You know what happens when I hear them," I shudder. I remember last time a came up with an excuse he made me start the task over again. "I have no idea what you are talking about, Tatsuo-sensei. I have said no such thing," I suck up. "Good, now keep running!" he yells. I grit my teeth and continue to sprint up the volcano.
An hour later, I reach the rim of the volcano. I fall to my knees, heaving heavily. I sit down with my head hanging loosely. I feel a large thump as Tatsuo lands beside me. "Good, now we begin your training," I sigh mentally. "Do you know the concept of senjutsu?" he asks. "I know it involves physical, spirtual, and natural chakra combining," I answer. "That's a good start. Senjutsu is achived when you create a balance of all three, like ninjutsu but with nature energy added to the mix. "But how do I get that nature energy?" I ask. "Well it is all around you. Meditate and it will come to you. Sit on the edge of the rim and let your feel dangle. I believe you won't need any jump start tricks such as our special oil that makes you more able to receive natural energy since you are already in tune with nature naturally," I take it as a compliment.
Sometimes I feel the nature energy gathering but it quickly dissipates. I groan a few times. Tatsuo noticing my annoyance, "You're doing better than most people with the oil. I think you'll get it in an hour," And behold an hour later I feel the sage marks appear on my face. I grin with my eyes still closed. "Now sustain it," I hear rumbling and myself being pick up by the back of my shirt. I am set down on a slate of rock. I peak open my eyes and notice.
That I am in the middle of the volcano," Hono, don't move," Tatsuo warned. "No kidding," I groan. I fall off the slate of rock many times but Tatsuo catches me. I start to become more comfortable balancing on the rock and I feel the markings on my face appear. I don't say a word as I open my eyes and look around. I stay firmly in place and hold sage mode. "Good, now standing up while in sage mode. I calmly place my hands on the rock and shift my leg out from underneath me. I extend my legs and slowly take my hands off of the slate. The rock wobbles but I stay balanced. I start to relax as I get a feel for it and I smile. "I have never seen someone advance so far in one 24 hour period. Since you are doing so well, we can call it a day and get sleep. I will pick you up so don't move," I stand still as I feel his feet wrap around my arm and fly me down the volcano. "I suggest you go to bed as soon as you eat. Tomorrow you will have an even bigger task. I eat and I fall asleep right after.
"Up, Hono," I voice commands. I groan and open my eyes slowly. "Eat quickly and run up the mountain in sage mode," I eat and gather nature energy. I run up the mountain in 40 minutes. A vast improvement from yesterday. "Now, I know this will sound strange but one of the special things about being a phoenix sage is being able to breath fire," I stare amazed. "Part of becoming a phoenix sage is nearly becoming a phoenix. I will place the mark of the phoenix on you so your body will not be affected my consuming fire or lava," I sweat nervously.
That is the mark of the phoenix. This book is ending soon so stay tuned for the release of Book 3!
