Chapter 7

Maddie's P.O.V

I didn't really know what to do. It felt like my whole life was turning, and taking a completely different direction then I had always wanted to go. And there wasn't anything that I could do about it. Faith, or destiny was stepping in and all any of us could was play our parts the best we could without having lessons. No, life was full of lessons. It was practice that nobody had, not even me.

"Here's your Scotch," Dylan said, setting it down in front of her with a jingle of ice hitting glass. And he placed the bottle by our ice buckets. "Rosa is working on your food, it should be done soon."

"Thank you," Alec said, handing him a ten as my mom took a long drink from her glass of Scotch. Dylan nodded, turning and heading back in with quick steps, seeming to feel the tension that was hanging over our table.

"I was raised differently," Mom started with a heavy sigh, "There wasn't love in my family. We were held together by fear; fear of what my father would do if we stepped out of line. We could be who we were as long as he wasn't around. When he was, we were to stay silent; no matter what was said, or asked."

"I would've been killed," I muttered in my glass, causing Kelsey to snicker and choke on her wine. I already didn't like my . . . grandfather. He sounded like the world's biggest asshole, and I just wanted to punch him in the face for the look that was crawling around behind my mom's eyes. A parent shouldn't put that look of pure fear and hatred in their child's eyes.

"Maddie!" Kelsey grumbled, shooting me a glare. And I couldn't even find the look on her face funny as she started running a napkin under her eyes, cleaning the make up that was trying to go crazy from her tears.

"Most likely," Alec agreed with my dad nodding his agreement. Mom just rolled her eyes but she didn't argue with any of us. We all know that I'm not one for staying quiet and doing what I'm told to do without saying something, usually something that had Mom yelling at me and Dad laughing.

"He had to have his hand in everything that happened, no matter if it was good or not. If something good happened with out him being involved, he would twist it and make it benefit him; or he was ruin it completely. That's how he was," Mom told us, her eyes dark and unforgiving. And the look that was there, just made me want to hit her father in the face, with a crowbar. It would probably be a bad idea for us to ever meet, I wasn't like Mom, and I didn't back down from a fight.

"My mother was different, she was the only thing that really kept us sane. When he wasn't around, she turned into a soft and loving person that could melt even the coldest hearts. Malcom-my father-actually forced her hand in marriage. He wormed his way into her father's good graces, and Malcom demanded her hand for the help he gave them," she explained, trying to hide the dark and burning hatred on her face.

What? He forced someone to marry him? And he made it where her parents couldn't say no. What kind of person does stuff like that? If I was her, I would hate his guts. He blackmailed her parents, just so he could own her. Damn, that would suck; being trapped in a marriage with a fucking narcissist. He clearly thought the world revolved around him, and what he wanted.

"Why would he do something like that?" I asked, not understanding how there was someone so fuck up, who just took what he wanted. That's what he was, an evil narcissist. Ashton squeezed my hand, and I glanced over at him when his grip didn't loosen. His brows were drawn down, and he just looked disgusted at what mom was telling us. And I agreed with him completely.

"Because she was gorgeous, and he wanted her so no one else could have her," Alec said, his eyes burning with his own hatred of Malcom. "He is just an evil man. He only cares about furthering himself, and getting more power." Mom gave Alec a small, dispirited smile which seemed to have a hint of guilt hiding around the edges.
