Chapter 2

Ashton's P.O.V

How could such a perfect day go so wrong? I wondered, looking down at the side walk. I knew that Brittany and all of the rest of our crowd were coming this way; it didn't shock me, everyone of them wanted something from us; either our attention or trying to see if they were our mates.
I sighed; looking up trying to find the girl I had ran into. I scanned the group of people around us and blinked. She was gone. I looked over the crowd again, just to make sure I hadn't over looked her. No, she was really gone. Where had she gone? When did she even leave? I held back the fire starting to burn in my chest and turned to Kelsey.

"Hey Kelsey, did you see Maddie leave?" I asked, shock running through me when I said her name. It was true, that girl in the dark clothes and glaring sapphire eyes was mine.

Kelsey raised her eyebrows and looked over the crowd. I watched as a panicked look came on to her face. "I don't know which way she went, Ashton! I can't tell!" Kelsey told me, still looking a little panicked. I met Kelsey's eyes and I saw we both knew what this meant. She's stronger then Kelsey, I thought to my self. Nobody is stronger then us. What the hell is going on? I wondered when the back of my neck started itching.

I spun around to where I felt the look coming from only to have my glare wasted on a bunch of trees. I felt the fire inside of me rise up for a moment before I turned around, knowing that I could ask the front office where little Maddie's room was. I strolled down the side walk, intent on finding out where my little mate went; ignoring everyone. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't even see Mia, which was almost unheard of. She was really a sight you couldn't miss.

"Ashton, where have you been?" Mia asked, her voice sounding horribly squeaky after hearing my mates smooth, very lightly accented voice.

I froze, and turned toward Mia, fighting with the fire inside of me. She stood there with her hand on her hip, looking at me with a sad, puppy dog look. She looked so fake to me now after seeing my mate; it was unbelievable that I once thought she was beautiful.

She had chestnut hair cut in short bob, and enough makeup on for all the cheerleaders to use, and her perfume was just getting on my nerves with the way it was making my nose numb, unable to smell anything but the stupid perfume. And her eyes looked too big, with the way she had on all of that blue stuff caked around her eyes; it clashed with her dark brown almost black eyes, but I knew she had put on her makeup to play up her other eyes, which were an cold, steel gray.

"Come on Ashton, we're going to be late," Mia said, holding out her hand. I walked forward and grabbed her hand, nothing happened when I touched her. Both of us looked up in shock when a sudden huge gush of wind howled around the school. Blinking, I looked at Kelsey, who shrugged while holding her hair out of her face before she turned and disappeared into a building, but I heard what she told me.

"End it with Miss Slut, before things get more complicated," her voice floated into my head. I sighed and let Mia pull me, knowing that Kelsey was right. Hell, I could barely hold on to Mia's hand, it just felt . . . not her, not my little mate.

Maddie' s P.O.V

I still didn't want to believe that I'd wanted to go down there and suck Mia's . . . blood; it was just too weird, even for me. I sighed and looked out across the field. This was my place, my sanctuary where I went when I wanted to escape the strict and claustrophobic rules of the campus. It was where I could be my self and not Abby's shadow.

I could just sit here and stare at nothing if I wanted too, and there was no one here to say something about it. That's what I love the most, just being able to be me. I sighed again and looked around for my tree. The field was rather big with unnaturally green grass that grew in all seasons, a huge pond in the middle with a small hill right beside it and a huge old oak tree that grew on the hill.
