"Zoe Pritchett?"
I perked up at the sound of my name, letting the magazine in my hands fall to my lap. I looked up at a middle-aged woman who was now smiling down at me, revealing her perfect teeth. For a moment, we just stared at each other, an awkward silence between us before I finally realized it was time for my appointment.
"Yes, oh my god, I'm so sorry.", I said, quickly jumping out of my chair and throwing the magazine onto the table beside me, rising to my feet so that I was eye-to-eye with the doctor's assistant.
"Don't worry about it.", she said, flashing me her pearly whites once again. "The doctor can see you now."
I nodded as she began leading the way down a long, narrow hallway, her heels clacking away on the tile as I removed my phone from my pocket, glancing at the screen to see I had 2 missed calls and a text from Will.
"Call me ASAP"
I couldn't help but wonder what was going on, but just as I was about to text a response back, the sound of heels stopped as we came to a halt outside of room #24, the same room that I've always been in when I came for a doctor's visit.
She turned the knob and pushed the door open, revealing the marble floors of the exam room, a table pushed against one wall, the surface covered with a thin sheet of cream-colored paper.
I entered the room, looking around at the new artwork hanging on the walls before hopping up onto the exam table, the paper crinkling under my weight.
I looked over at the assistant, who was staring back at me with wide eyes. Once again, we remained quiet until she finally waved goodbye, leaving the room and making her way down the hall, the sound of her heels slowly fading away as she rounded the corner.
My feet swung beneath me as I patiently waited for the doctor, my head leaning against the wall as I stared up at the ceiling tiles. I was just starting to count the tiny specks on the ceiling when the sound of a knock on the door snapped me out of my trance, bringing my attention to my doctor, who was now standing in the doorway with a clipboard.
"There's my favorite client.", he said with a smile, casually walking into the room before closing the door behind him. "What seems to be the problem today?", he asked, sitting down in a chair that sat directly across from the table I was sitting on.
"I, um...I've been having a lot of nightmares since, you know...", I hesitated with my words, slowly taking in a breath of air before finally spitting the words out. "The accident.", I quickly finished, my heart stopping in my chest as I finally managed to say the two words I've dreaded the most. The accident.
"Oh...?", he said, crossing one leg over the other as he stared at me intently.
"Yeah...?", I replied, my palms beginning to sweat as I stared back at him, suddenly becoming uncomfortable.
"Why didn't you come to me sooner? I mean...this is pretty serious...", he said, his cold blue eyes staring deep into mine as he leaned forward in his chair, anticipating my response.
"I guess I was...afraid? I mean...I thought you might look at me like I was a freak or something...", I replied, wiping my sweaty hands on my jeans before looking down at the tile.
I heard him stand up, my eyes still locked tight on the floor as he stopped in front of me, his hand suddenly on my shoulder. I slowly lifted my head so that our eyes met, a worried expression on his face.
"How could I ever think you're a freak?", he asked, the corners of his mouth turning up as he gazed into my eyes, slowly leaning forward, his face only inches away from mine.
I smiled back at him before moving back towards the wall, putting some distance between us. He must've gotten the hint because he stepped back too, removing his hand from my shoulder and giving me a concerned look.
"I'm sorry...it's just...I can't.", I said, my cheeks burning with embarrassment as I looked at the floor again.
"No, it's fine. I understand.", he replied before pulling his notepad and a pen from his pocket. He remained quiet for a brief moment before finally speaking again, his voice seeming to echo off the walls. "I'm gonna prescribe you Eszopiclone, a medication commonly used to treat insomnia. I'm also gonna write you a prescription for Trazodone, seeing as you've obviously been depressed ever since the accident, which is most likely causing you to lose sleep.", he said, quickly scrawling the names of the medications onto the notepad.
He paused, causing me to look up at him. He smiled awkwardly before tearing the paper away, hesitating a moment before handing me the prescriptions.
I smiled as he handed me the piece of paper, our hands touching for a brief moment before he flashed me a quick smile and hurried me out the door.
