"Mail delivery!", a man called from outside, his voice low and raspy.
"Just a minute!", I called back, quickly throwing my robe over my shoulders and tying it shut before opening the door, revealing a short man carrying a package and a few envelopes.
"Thank you.", I said as he handed me the items, smiling at me before briskly returning to his truck.
I watched as he hopped into the driver's seat, the truck lurching into motion before rounding a corner, suddenly disappearing from my sight.
I laughed as I walked back inside, using the side of my foot to kick the door shut before heading towards the kitchen.
The sweet smell of blueberry pancakes itched my nose, causing me to pat myself on the back for becoming roommates with someone who could actually cook.
As I entered the kitchen, I saw Will standing by the stove, a robe draped over his shoulders. Although, I have to admit, I didn't see the point. He hadn't tied it shut, revealing his incredible abs and his boxers, which I tried my best not to stare at.
"Ahem?", he cleared his throat, snapping my attention away from his body so that my eyes locked tight on his.
"Huh?", I asked, completely oblivious to what was going on.
"How many pancakes do you want?", he asked with a slight chuckle, his laugh causing my heart to stop in my chest.
"Uh...two?", I replied, practically asking him if he thought I should have two or more pancakes. Stupid.
"I'll give you three.", he said with a smirk, dimples forming in his cheeks as he popped three pancakes onto a plate before sliding it across the counter towards me.
I licked my lips, but just as I was about to take a bite, I remembered why I'd come in the kitchen in the first place.
"Oh, right...um, you got mail.", I said, reaching out the small stack of envelopes to him before holding up the package.
"Hm.", he said, grabbing everything from my hands, scanning the envelopes over before handing one to me.
"This one's for you.", he said, reaching it out to me.
I grabbed it from his hand, looking the envelope over as if he had read it wrong. But plain as day, my name and address were scrawled across it in black sharpie. Zoe Pritchett, Apartment 3B, 4th Avenue, New York, NY 10003. But oddly enough, there was no return address.
I sighed before tearing the envelope open, only to reveal a handwritten letter that had been written on parchment paper.
Dear Zoe,
I couldn't help but notice that you were the only person in my contact list that I hadn't contacted in years. And yet here I am, hiding behind a wall because I'm afraid to confront anyone. I've been holed up in a shack, unaware of what the sun even looks like anymore. Everyone says I'm crazy, but I knew you wouldn't. That's why I'm writing to you. Because you're the only person in the whole world who ever seemed to understand me. And so, I hope that you receive this letter and decide to write back. But for now, I am going to keep my identity a secret. It's better that way...
Sincerely, Nobody
I stared at the letter in shock, absolutely no idea who it could be from. And yet here it was, in my hands, for some ungodly reason. And here was this man, telling me that it was "better" if I didn't know who he was.
Who was he? Some sort of ax-murderer that wanted to become pen pals just so that he could show up at my house and slaughter me?
Who was this guy, and why had he said that I was the only person in the world who ever seemed to understand him?
Had we known each other?
And if so...how?
She's finally gotten her first letter! EEK! I hope you guys are enjoying the story so far. Don't forget to vote and comment to let me know what you think! :D
