Get some sleep.
Right.I stood outside the lit doorway of Cabin 34, Janus. Lee had reluctantly shown me.
It had a dozen regular-sized doors on each exterior wall, but gaps were filled with tinier doors.
Complete overkill, but I kind of liked the Alice in Wonderland look. I supposed the doors that weren't the main one were either traps, solid, or some other surprise.I thought it obvious of which door was correct - the one to the left, a foot off the ground, with a painting of a two-faced head. The ears of each face melded together on the odd man. I reached forward and caught the ebony handle, twisted it and--
Opened it to the cabin.
I had opened this door several times, and each time it went straight inside. Bunks lined the walls, blah blah blah.
I stepped back and closed the door.
Cmon. Cmon.
I reached deep into my gut and imagined the doorman in his gawky uniform.
Cmon.
I pushed open the door and--"Hello again, Jr.!" He said.
"Janus?" I asked, squaring my shoulders. He tutted, shaking his head.
"You must be firm in your decision before you attempt to make a choice. A choice to believe if I am or am not Janus." He told me. I glowered.
"Janus, you insufferable prick." I growled. He pressed his lips together.
"OK. We have a few things to talk about. This way, Riley." He gestured lightly and turned, heading towards a set of large marble doors. I did not follow.
"My name," I said dangerously, "is Ryan."
Janus the Holy Prick turned, clasping his hands. He smiled wanly.
"Of course. Come come!"
I followed, mouth set in a grimace of annoyance and curiosity.
He stood near the doors and gestured with a hand, indicating I go through.
"What's on the other side?" I asked, cautious. He struck a 'thinking' pose.
"Depends," he said, looking at me with pursed lips and raised eyebrows. He looked like a lizard.
"On?"
"You."
"Doing?"
He waved his hand dramatically.
"Stuff."
I glared with such ferocity that he shifted uneasily.
"What. Is. On. The. Other. Side. You. Piece. Of-"
"Now, now." He hastened.
"That is no way to speak to your Dad-"
"You are not my Dad. You are my biological father. Being a dad requires goddamn effort and being there for your kid and for that kid's mother. How dare you call yourself anything more then a- a sperm donor!" I spat. He quailed considerably.
OK so maaaaybe I was a tad spiteful.
"You... You..." He deflated.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you... And.. And Patricia." He said. I gritted my teeth.
"I know this won't be of considerable excuse but the Law forbids me from contacting you or your mother after... After a birth."
"My birth." I clarified. He nodded forlornly.
"I know you won't be in a hurry to forgive m-"
"Your forgiven." I said. He looked up, surprised.
"Just - get my goddamn name right." I added, and pushed through the door.
I appeared on the other side of the door. In the cabin.
Joints weirdly aching and feeling rather drained, I collapsed into a bunk and fell asleep.I woke up at around 4am, starving. Stumbling in the pre-dawn dark, I shrugged on the Camp Half-Blood I had shed in the night. After a moment of hesitation, I scooped up Freckles in its sheath and put it on.
Heading outside with my feet in worn Converses, I ran fingers through my disastrous bed hair and eventually gave up. I guess I'd go through the day looking like a pine tree.
I found the pavilion and walked the aisles, unsure of what to do next. Sit down and wait? Find someone to help?
The next wave of hunger cramps made me dizzy and fatigue didn't help, so I sat down at a bench and sighed.
"Want anything to eat?" Came a familiar voice. I looked up and saw Lee, looking exactly as she did yesterday.
"Why are you up?" I asked, rubbing sleep from my eyes. She shrugged a shoulder and reached past me to where a plate had mysteriously appeared. She handed it to me.
"Yum.""No, idiot. Think of what you want to eat."
"This system seems prejudiced against cereal. Or soup. Or porridge! Poor porri-"
