On the outskirts of Dragon Lance, an old desolate town removed from the modern world, stood a lonely and ancient building. It stood out among the massive green face of forest trees which surrounded it, like a pimple on a beautiful face.
It was Saint Michael's Orphanage for Girls and Boys and the building's impressive architecture was known throughout the little town of Dragon Lance. The orphanage was built almost as impressive as various churches in the town, which had a rich religious history itself. The orphanage had many of the architectural features seen in churches over time. It was built to have wide and strong walls and it had high arching windows that were beautifully decorated with coloured glass, huge doors that stood like sentinels, guarding the inner dorms of the orphanage and very tall bell tower that rose above the tree canopy below. On early Sunday mornings one of the workers at the orphanage would climb the magnitude of stairs and tug on that aged rope that would swing the old bell and then let it ring out its sonorous chimes over the town of Dragon lance. In addition to the similarities between the orphanage and church, the matron and workers of the orphanage even dressed like nuns. Despite all these things Saint Michael's orphanage was a cold place without love and that was probably the biggest difference between the orphanage and the church.
Saint Michael's Orphanage housed more than three hundred orphans, making it the largest orphanage in Dragon Lance and to no one's surprise, the order of the day was strict discipline. No one was allowed to step out of line, ever. If any orphan dared misbehave the consequence was severe punishment. Punishment so dreadful that the orphans never spoke of them, they just remained painfully silent and as a result their eyes grew sad and faces pale with passing years as they longed for adoption. Thankfully they have a unified spirit as orphans, all knowing of the other's predicament and as a result they could all support one another and keep their spirits up among themselves, despite the harsh reality they faced.
Among these orphans were two who had been at the orphanage for nearly sixteen years. They were known as Annette and Harry Webster. They had arrived at the orphanage on the same day when they were new born babies, something that rarely happened. Obviously the orphanage had named them with a similar surname, although they did not believe the two to be related. Despite this, they became good friends as they grew up. They didn't choose however, to mingle with the other orphans as they looked upon the two as being strange in a way. They could probably not be blamed for their actions as they would often wonder about the two quiet kids who chose to keep to themselves and who didn't play like the other orphans played. As the years passed a rift drifted between the others and Annette and Harry. None would ever be rude to them, but they were kept at a distance. It was obvious that these two orphans had always seemed out of place and that they did not fit in.
The orphans at Saint Michael's orphanage were sent to school, by the good grace of the government who agreed to pay their school fees. Annette loved history, biology, art and languages. Harry on the other side loved science and entrepreneurial studies, although his greatest dream was to become a chef.
The hobby they shared was reading. They would visit Dragon Lance's library as often as they could, favouring fantasy and science fiction. The library was always a pleasant experience after having to spend days within the dull orphanage where the rooms were a pale grey colour and the bedding a blue-ish grey. One might even slip into depression seeing these colours all the time, so orphans enjoyed their time away. The orphans understood that many things in life were similar to their orphanage. It appeared pleasant from outside, but within many dark secrets brewed in even darker nights.
And so Annette and Harry fought through the dark days in hope that they might finally be sent home with a couple who will take them both, but as the days crept on their childhood hope faded away until it seemed like only a vague dream.
