it's really late i know, but i've had my nose on my desk all night and my mouth on bottles in between each hit. and in the middle of every loud thought in my mind, one stood out the most.
maria.
i knocked on her door and she surprisingly opened the door before the 4th knock. her hair was well done and her face was glowing but she was in a big shirt and pajamas.
i smiled at her, laughed actually and looked up over her into her house but she closed the door more.
"what happened to you baby? we've been looking all over for you, and you're nowhere to be found. have you been avoiding your friends because you've made new friends."
she looked at the ground and back up at me. i grabbed her shoulder and shook her, and she let me.
"come onnn, talk to me! you can tell me anything."
"my parents died."
that sentence came out like a wrecking ball. but i didn't react to it. i stared at her and eventually let go of her, when she began to cry into her long baggy sleeve. i didn't know how to react and my body wasn't all together at the moment.
"how?"
"they got in a car accident, while they were away, I talked to them the night before. everything was fine."
i shrugged.
"maybe one of them was drinking and driving?"
"yeah that's what i thought but that wasn't it. but it was like they were forced to get in an accident. they have marks on their necks like someone choked them or like someone was forcing them to let go of the wheel or something."
my stomach dropped and my eyes started to throb. my feet felt like running miles away from maria's front yard and my upper half felt like passing out.
"i gotta go."
she looked at me and stepped out her door more.
"are you okay?"
i stopped in the middle of the street, and turned back at her, hearing distant honking and eye blinding front lights.
"i'm fine."
