Faith woke up extra early for church on Sunday. She wanted to spend extra time on her hair and makeup because even though she would never admit it, she wanted to impress Sam. Since the first time she met him sophomore year she had always felt the need to try to impress him. She felt almost as if he was out of her league so to speak. It's funny how the tables had turned and he was now the one begging to be with her. Well there had never really been any begging to begin with actually. Honestly, they had met by complete luck... Well if you could call what they have lucky. It was their sophomore year and they were both in the band. It was Faith's first year on the color guard. The show theme that year was British Invasion and Faith and Sam didn't know each other. They knew of one other because they had gone to school together since the 6th grade, but the opportunity nor the desire to talk ever arose. Anyways, they were at rehearsal one fine Tuesday when fate decided to intervene on the behalf of the two unsuspecting victims. Their band director Mr. Smith had the marching band practicing the shows most gutsy move. The band would perform a follow the leader style move for 16 counts while the auxiliary line would run from inside the forms to the outside with T-poles. This move called for expert precision. If one person moved too fast or too slow it would result in a collision. Which is exactly what happened. No one was really sure who's fault it was. Was it Sam going too fast or was it Faith going too slow? Or maybe there were other forces involved. Either way they collided and they both fell to the ground. Sam's quads fell and crushed Faith's leg causing her to drop her flag right on Sam's head. This caused a domino effect. The people following Sam tried to stop but the people behind them had no idea what had happened so they kept going and bumped the stopped person into Sam which made his quads crush Faith's leg even more. When Smith finally noticed and managed to stop the band there was at least five more people in the pile-up. Smith ran across the field to the scene of the accident. The people that were on top had already gotten up uninjured the only people left were Sam and Faith. Sam looked dazed and disengaged. Faith was in tears trying to hide her pain. Faiith was never one to show her pain in front of strangers. Some guys came and pick Sam's quads up off of Faith's leg. It was a gruesome sight to see. The bone in her left leg was jutting out in an unnatural direction.

"Call an ambulance now." Smith directed. Someone got out their phone and dialed 911.

The ambulance arrived promptly. The paramedics put Faith on a stretcher and put her in the ambulance. They hooked her up to the machines that would monitor her vitals while they checked Sam for concussion. Faith tried to focus her attention away from the searing pain she felt in her left leg. She looked around the ambulance trying direct her attention to her surroundings. She started to notice the scary looking devices and machinery that were in the compartments of the ambulance that the paramedics had left open. She decided it was time to focus her attention elsewhere. She listened to the sounds that were around her. The hum of the ambulance's engine, the muffled sound of the paramedics talking in the front seat. Then she noticed that Sam was still getting checked out on the bumper of the ambulance. She listened to what was being said.

"Is she going to be okay?"

"She most likely broke her fibula. I depends how it was broken to determine the rate of recovery."

"Oh man. I feel like crap now."

"You should. You just got a concussion."

"I meant about busting her leg, and the concussion isn't helping either." he said rubbing the lump on his head.

"Oh. Well, you're free to go after we talk with a parent or guardian."

"I'm his parent." Mr. Sterling, our assistant band director, spoke up.

"Okay. He's going to need to be checked on every two hours for the next twenty-four hours, and no physical activity for at least two weeks. His concussion is very minor but this is the standard procedure." The paramedic went on to tell Sam's dad more info and what he needed to do for Sam's head injury. While they were talking Sam climbed in the back of the ambulance. He came and sat on the bench next to Faith.

"Hey, I'm really sorry about what happened." He started.

"It's not your fault. Stuff happens sometimes. What can you do?" She said quickly.

"Yeah, I guess so. My name's Sam by the way."

"I'm Faith." Her voice sounded clipped, and her face was beet red from the pain in her leg.

"So you're new on the flag line this year right?"

"Yeah." Her voice sounded clipped even though she was trying her best not to sound like she was in pain. Of course her leg bone was sticking out awkwardly so if anyone had a reason to sound a certain way it was her. She continued to talk to Sam for a few minutes and he somehow managed to make her laugh despite her pain. By the time the paramedics were ready to leave and Sam had to go she had completely forgotten about that pain she was in. That's how they met. Faith started to fall for Sam on that day.

Church went well. Sam had grown up in the church so he knew exactly what to do and say. And of course he was a complete show off during praise and worship. That was another thing about Sam. He was a an excellent musician all around. Not only does he play the quads but he also plays guitar, piano, and harmonica. He had an excellent singing voice and dreamed of one day become a famous musician. If it was anyone else wanting to become a musician she would have straight up told them how crazy it was, but Sam had passion and he was good at what he did.

After church Sam drove Faith home. On the way there they talked.

"So are we good now?" Sam asked tentatively. Faith wasn't sure what he meant.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean are we back together?"

"No. I'm sorry, but I can't just jump back on the Sam bandwagon again. Not after you cheated on me a second time."

"Do you think you and I still have a chance? Maybe not right now but in the future?" Faith sighed. Despite her cool appearance she was fighting with herself. She really wanted to jump back into a relationship with Sam as soon as he asked but she knew if she did that it would be the same thing as last time. No. She resolved to put him on probation so to speak. He wouldn't know about it but she would be keeping an eye on him to see if he was serious about wanting to be with her.

"I do think we have a chance, but if we jump in to a relationship right away its going to be just like it was before."

"So how long do you think it will take?"

"I don't know Sam, I really don't know."
