Back at Teron's, they opened the rock collection and took out the moonstone. "Looks pretty," April said affectionately as she took it from Teron's hand.
"I don't care how it looks as long as it works." Felix responded, grabbing it from April.
"What you don't like pretending to be Sevin?" Paul snickered.
"No. Too much touchy feely, I don't see the point."
"Boys," Kristine said with a sigh, and April giggled.
"So what do we do with it now?" Calvin asked, ignoring his sister's words.
"We wait for the eclipse." Teron said, taking the stone back from Felix.
"And I think we all need showers."
"I think it's the rotting corpse," Paul said, pointing toward the tunnel.
"No. It's us." Ashton said after taking a whiff of his shirt.
Taking turns for showers consumed most of the day that remained, and after getting burgers to eat, they walked to the clearing by the stream and waited for the eclipse to start.
Moaning, Paul exclaimed, "When is it gonna start?"
"Soon," Ashton responded, pointing at the moon. "See the shadow is already starting to cover the corner of the moon. Give it maybe an hour?"
"An hour..."
"Shut up." Felix growled, giving Paul a shove.
Resigning himself to silence, Paul wandered away from the others and sat down on the shoreline, tossing rocks into the stream.
"Come on, come on..." Paul muttered, watching the eclipse almost at the apex. He didn't want to wait any longer. Taking the moonstone out of his pocket, Teron held it up to the thin beam of moonlight as the corona began; the stage of the eclipse that would have the moonlight at its strongest, but for only a very short time.
They all watched as the gemstone seemed to glow, growing in intensity as it collected the moonbeam, storing it within its' milky core. As the corona passed, the eclipse began to wane, and the moonstone's glow faded slightly before remaining steady.
"What is it doing?" Calvin asked.
"Who knows, maybe it's communicating with us if anything," said Ashton.
Taking the stone from Teron he turned to go and the stone flickered, pulsing in time to his heartbeat. "What the -" he turned, handing the stone to Kristine, suddenly cautious. The flickering light ceased in Kristine's palm, returning to its pale glowing state.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"It flickered." Ashton said, weirded out.
"What do you mean it flickered? It's not doing anything."
"Yes it did." Ashton stated, not wanting to touch it again.
"Oh give it here, you big baby." April muttered, grabbing the stone from Kristine.
The stone flickered again, the light growing stronger as she turned around to head back down the path.
"See!" Ashton exclaimed, pointing at her hand.
With every stride April took, the light either grew brighter or dimmed, depending on the direction she went. "I think it's trying to lead us somewhere," she said in astonishment.
"Maybe it will lead us to Sevin." Felix said hopefully. "Keep walking."
