Chapter 2

It’s been two days since I’ve been home and it’s almost back to normal. Almost. My dad is still in a coma, I’ve seen him each day for short periods of time. I try to talk to him but he still doesn’t respond. I’m not sure how long this can go on, the team (Muddville Raiders) lost their game last night and let me tell you it was like they weren’t even trying. I couldn’t bring myself to go so I watched it on TV. I was not impressed, this wasn’t the team my dad coaches.

“Jess.” Caleb hollered as he flopped down on the couch beside me.

“Yes? O’Mighty one?” I asked cocking an eyebrow.

He laughed, sliding his arm around my neck putting me in a head lock.

“O’Mighty one?” he questioned.

“Cut the crap, Caleb I can’t breathe...” I panted. He loosened up his hold and I almost got lightheaded, the sudden intake of air will do that to a person.

“What do you want?” I asked again.

“Will you cook me some food?” Caleb used his baby voice and puppy dog eyes, I used to never be able to say no to that but now that I’ve been away from home for so long I can see through his crap.

Someone’s deep laughter brought us out of our stare down. We looked over toward kitchen door way and our oldest brother Andrew, stood there in his Philadelphia Eagles sweat pants, his shaggy black hair was off to one side. He must have just woken up. That shithead always slept in. He was the same height as my brother john, and looked like a supermodel. Hell all of my brothers looked like that, I still don’t know where I came from.

“Yes, douche bag?” I asked.

Caleb laughed this time. He laughed so hard I thought he was going to pee himself. Andrew sent me a dirty look; he walked to the other side of couch and sat down. Great, now I’m stuck between two douche bags.

“Will you make me some food?” Andrew asked, doing the same thing Caleb did.

“No! You guys are adults now, cook your own food.” Pretty satisfied with my answer, I sat straight in my seat crossed my arms over my chest and started watching the movie I had tried watching before Caleb came in.  Andrew “tsked” me and before I knew it, he had thrown me over his shoulder.

“Jessy, you should have just cooked us food. It would have been so much easier.” He said with a sly grin on his face.

“Put her down!”

I looked to where the voice was coming from and I couldn’t directly see because I was upside down, but I knew that voice. It was my brother John. I tried to wiggle free of Andrews grasp but he just tightened them, earning my famous right hook to the middle of his back. John walked all the way in to the kitchen and stared at us.

“I need you to come to practice with me, jess. Our trainer just walked out and I can’t have practice until we have a medical trainer on the field.”

Right when I had just enough leverage to get away from Andrew he drops me. That asshole drops me on my face in our kitchen, on the hardwood floor.

“Oops?” Andrew looked at me, then john. I rolled my eyes and got up off the floor.

“….ok, John but only until you find a replacement.”

John nods at me as I walk up the stair way to change. I wasn’t sure what to wear so I threw on my old Muddville Raiders jersey and a pair of black basketball shorts. This should be interesting, I knew how the team was when I played but that was nearly four years ago. I threw my long chocolate brown hair up into a messy ponytail and grabbed my black Nike tennis shoes off the bottom step.

“Alright, John ready to go.”

I walked out to the truck without even paying attention to what I was doing.

“Were you born in a barn?” John asked as soon as I hopped in his truck. And by hop, I mean Hop. John had a truck almost like mine the only thing different was that my truck was dark hunter green and stacks. We both had Dodge Ram’s, mine was diesel his wasn’t. I’ve always been a diesel girl, mainly because my daddy was a diesel guy.

“What?”

John pointed down to my feet, I was still barefoot.

“Oh yeah, well I like the feel of grass on my feet thank you very much.”

About half way to the field John slowed down and looked straight at me.

“Jess, these boys aren’t bad guys. Their fathers have major problems with woman in our coaching staff, I don’t know why. If you have ANY problems, and I mean ANY let me know, I will take care of it.”

Johns brown eyes looked straight into my blue ones. I knew he was deadly serious; we live in the middle of B.F.E. Ohio where certain things were still frowned upon. Currently women and football coaching didn’t seem to mix. Hopefully today didn’t go bad, I think I’m already starting to regret. As we pulled up to the field I could see the players in practice jerseys running sprints, warming up. I saw the offensive line coordinator, the defensive line coordinator and special teams toward the other end of the field. The sun was shining and I knew today would be a challenge but the smell of the field had my adrenalin pumping. Squinting to look closer I felt how sore my face really was, there was defiantly going to be a bruise on my face. There he was, the one I tried to forget about.

Suddenly I stopped.

Shit.

“What’s wrong?” John asked looking around for something that would scare me, ha after all this time my little brother was still trying to be my guardian angel.

“Jake” I mumbled under my breath.

John instantly started laughing.

“Good luck, Sissy.” John patted me on the back and we headed for the field.
