"But mother! I thought we had designers to do all of this!?" I complained, throwing my arms in the air.
"We do, but they are only setting up the inside of the venue. I need someone to decorate the outside so that it looks presentable. And with your creative and artistic attitude, I believe you'd be perfect for the job. All you'll need to do is tell the workers what to do, that's all! It will be fine darling, trust me." she explained as she took a sip of her tea.
I stared at her ,waiting for her to tell me that she was just kidding. But, unfortunately, she didn't and continued to sip her tea while peering through the list of guests coming to the event.
My mother wanted me to help set up for this large event we were hosting this coming weekend. Many important figures would be coming so it needed to be perfect. Which worried me because my mother was expecting me, ME, to design the outside of the venue. How she trusts me to do this is completely beyond me. I may be artistic and good at designing things, but this was huge and there was no room for errors. Well...at least in my mother's opinion.
If I mess up, I know she'll be angry with me.
"Plus, this will show the ladies in the NYES society that you are truly capable of handling such things. It's a perfect opportunity to show how talented you really are." she stated proudly, her eyes gleaming in excitement at the thought of all the other ladies being completely impressed with my 'talents'.
I slouched in my seat, feeling the pressure slowly building upon my back. With pressure, came stress, and with stress came acne and lack of sleep. Ugh, sometimes I wish I wasn't the daughter of such important people.
"Oh! And the Payne's will be there too! You and Liam will be able to catch up since you haven't spoken in awhile! Oh this is going to be perfect!" she said happily.
I nodded, "Yeah, it is." I muttered, feeling no excitement towards the fact that Liam will be there.
"So, when do I start planning out this....thing?" I asked hesitantly.
My mother turned towards me, "Well, it's to be held this weekend, so I expect you to start today. You have five days which I expect will be enough. Those new workers your father recently hired will be helping you, along with a couple others." she explained.
I couldn't help but sit up a little straighter at the mention of the two Maliks.
"Oh. Okay-"
"And I wan't you to go to the venue this afternoon to take a look around so you know what you're dealing with." she stated, well more like demanded.
I nodded,"Okay, then I should go get ready. Excuse me." I said politely as I stood up.
"Good luck darling." my mother said before peering back down at the guest list.
~~~
I stepped out of our car, giving a small nod of gratitude towards our driver Thomas as he held my door open. I flattened out the bottom of my dress before walking towards the large building.
I grimaced at the sight. It was a beautiful brick building but the entire outside of it was filled with weeds, branches, bushes, long grass that needed to be cut, and dead plant bushes. This place needed a serious upgrade on it's landscape.
"The inside of the building is beautiful, but one wouldn't think it was because of the outside." a voice spoke from beside me.
I jumped, startled by it, grasping my chest with my free hand.
I turned to see the elder Malik beside me with Zayn next to him. They stood there in their work clothes, which were slightly ripped and dirty.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to give you a fright." Yaser apologized.
I shook my head quickly, giving him a reassuring smile, "No it's fine."
My eyes flickered to Zayn, who was already staring at me. I felt a burning on my cheeks so I looked away and back towards the venue.
"I dont understand...why would my parents want the event to be held here, outside of the city, in this unused building?" I questioned in confusion.
Why would they go to this old building when there were plenty of nice venues inside the heart of the city? I mean this would take more than five days to make it look perfect!
I felt anxiety build up inside of me as I realized I had little time to make this place perfect.
"This place cost a fortune to rent out for one evening. It's owned by some family that's related to the Royal family in the United Kingdom. Not many people here in the city ever rent it out because it costs so much. Once we clean up the outside, this place will look glorious." Yaser explained as he observed the old building in interest.
I was surprised by his knowledge of the place. I didn't even know that and I'm pretty sure I'm SUPPOSED to know that.
"Oh.." is all I could say.
Yaser gave me a warm smile before throwing his thumb backwards, gesturing behind him. I looked to see a group of men who were all silently watching us. By the clothes they wore I could instantly tell they were workers.
They all stood, waiting for my orders.
Oh lord, this sudden feeling of authority was completely new to me.
I cleared my throat, "Um, okay.." I bit my lip, squinting my eyes as I looked at the building. Wondering where we should start.
I didn't have any plans or ideas written so I was forced to think on the spot. I inwardly began to panic as I realized I didn't know what to do.
I noticed other cars pulling into the driveway, and the moment people starting coming out of the cars I knew they were the designers who would be working on the inside.
How I wish they could do this for me.
I swallowed nervously, unsure of what to do.
Yaser, noticing my flustered state, quickly spoke, "How about we start by cutting the lawn and getting rid of the weeds and broken branches from the trees?" he suggested helpfully.
I let out a relieved chuckle, grinning widely, "Yes! Thank you, that's a perfect idea." I said looking over at Zayn who gave me a small smile.
A weird feeling developed in my stomach at the sight.
Yaser nodded before turning to the group of men behind him and telling them what to do.
I feeling of great gratitude towards Yaser hit me.
I relaxed as they all began to grab shovels, wheel barrels, and basic gardening equipment. Now that they had something to do, I had time to plan.
I pulled out the small hand held journal that sat in my small purse, grabbing a pen too.
I stared at the blank page, thinking about what items we would need to get for the outside.
"Why don't you start with flowers? We could plant them along the outside once we have pulled up all the weeds and cleared the area." a smooth voice spoke from beside me.
My heart rate picked up at the sound of his voice.
I looked up to meet his honey brown eyes. I don't know why, but his eyes just seemed to make me stop breathing for a second. They were so beautiful and mesmerizing. And the fact that he had such perfectly curled eyelashes surrounding them made them even more appealing.
I shook the thoughts away, realizing I hadn't answered yet.
"Yes...uh that's a good idea." I said, quickly scribbling down 'flowers' on the blank page.
"I'm guessing this job was just thrown on you?" he asked knowingly.
I gave out a small chuckle, "Yes, yes it was."
He bit his lip, staring at me for a moment.
I couldn't help but feel a little self conscious. His gaze was actually quite intense.
"Don't worry, I bet you'll do a fantastic job." he assured quietly, and before I could respond he walked away and began working.
