River Hale came from a family where his father was a drunk who could give 2 shits about his children and his mother was dead. He has a little sister named Lily. He and Aria really related to eachother in terms of family matters. But it was with Elie like he felt he could escape the world.

Elie walked into 'Reds' and saw River sitting their reading a book. She always had a crush on him but then again who didn't. He was tall, blonde and had blue eyes you could get lost in. She decided to sit down next to him as she waited for Aria."Hey El." River said noticing her as soon as she sat down.
Elie couldn't help but smile everytime he looked at her. "Hey River." She said with a cheeky smile.
"So where's Aria?" River asked.
"Outside on a call. But did you know she contacted her dad?" Elie blurted out. "Of course you didn't I'm not supposed to tell you, but I had to this is a secret I couldn't keep."
"Why would she do that? Her father is horrible." River said in shock.
"Exactly. Wait till her mother hears about it." Elie said.
"No, El don't tell her mom. That's something Aria should do when she's ready." River said.
"You really think she's gonna tell her mom?" Elie asked in disbelief.
"It's not our decision to make."
"Ugh, fine." Elie said giving up the idea.
Aria's mother worked here as a waitress. She saw us and came to take our orders. "Elie, River. How are you guys doing?" She asked with a smile.
"Great Ms. Smith." Elie said genuinely but with a fake smile.
"So what do you guys want to eat?" She asked.
"Just a water." River said already knowing his order.
"A chocolate milkshake." Elie said.
Ms. Smith wrote down the orders, "ok I will be back with your drinks." She said before walking away.
"Ok, El what's wrong?" River asked.
"What do you mean?" Elie asked confused.
"You only order milkshakes when somethings wrong. For instance when you and Jason broke up you order 3 milkshakes and it wasn't to share." River said.
Elie was at a lost for words. Just as she was about to answer Aria walked in. "Oh look Aria's here." Elie said avoiding the question.
"Hey Aria." River said.
"Sup River." Aria said sitting on the other side of him.
"Who were you talking to?" Elie asked curiously.
"No one, just some dumb survey thing." Aria said lying.
"Do you know what's up with Elie?" River asked Aria since Elie wasn't saying anything.
Elie shook her head at Aria indicating she didn't want her to tell him.
Aria made up another lie. "Um I don't know." She said.
"Well then if neither of you want to tell me then Aria i should ask why are you talking to your dad again?" River said throwing Elie under the bus.
Aria gave Elie the death stare. Elie mouthed 'im sorry.'
Aria pulled him aside as she saw her mother approching with the drinks.
"Look i'm talking to him because he's my father." She said.
"No he's a dead beat. He was never a father!" River said trying to keep his voice down.
"And what is yours?" Aria fired back.
"Aria, you and I are the ones who get left. I don't want to see you get hurt again." River said explaining his anger.
"Apparently no one does but understand that I won't let him hurt me." She said. "And how did you know somethings wrong with Elie?" She asked.
River turned his head to Elie who was drinking her milkshake and reading the book he left. "That's why." He said.
"Look if something is wrong with her you have to tell me." River said.
"Why doesn't it matter?" Aria asked.
"Because she is one my best friends." He said.
"No it's something more than that." Aria said looking into his blue eyes.
"No there's nothing more. She's my best friend and just like you I don't like to see her hurt because I care about her a lot." River said staring back.
Aria smirked, "does she know that?" She asked.
"No and I don't want her to. I'm not messing up one of the best things in my life." River said now looking at Elie with a smile on his face.
