"Happy birthday baby," I smiled to Maya as she put a big grin on her face. She played with the chocolate cake, sticking her small fingers in it and eating it with the frosting icing her face. "I see that you like the cake, Mo?"
It was truly a fact that my daughter's smile could light up the world, even if no one could find the light in her. Maya's dress got a little chocolate—maybe a lot . . But it was all worth it to her happy on her first birthday. The bad thing was that Shawn couldn't come. I wasn't surprised at first because he always did this: missing out on special occasions. For a while I thought it was my fault, but I just had to push the thoughts away for a bit.
Hailee nudged me, her eyes pinching together in confusion. "Yo, ma girl Camila—where the hell is your bitch of a boyfriend?" She asked, her hand placed on the counter as she leaned. "Wouldn't Mendes come to his daughter's first birthday? Jesus Christ, I'm going to punch him in the throat the next time I see him."
"Gladly," I sighed.
The night went by a little quicker than I thought, and now everyone was leaving. First it was Matt, Lauren, Leah and Marvin, Dinah, Joey, Stella and Jenn, Taylor—and now it was Hailee. Honestly, I wish we had another one of those girl nights, but with Shawn coming late at night from the hours of ten to twelve, I could never have a girl around.
Though I did get a text from him, making me squeal for the first time in years.

— hey mila, I have to stay at work for a little bit more, and I don't think I'm coming home. Tell Mo I said happy birthday, and that I miss her. sorry for the late text. bye, I love you. Before Hailee stepped out of the door, I took a hold on her arm and pulled her back into the living room. "Mil-"
"Please stay here, I can't be alone with baby Mo. I need someone to stay with me, all these nights without anyone else but us have been hell, Haiz. I need your help, please for the love of God." Camila sighed, pressing the palms of her hands to Hailee's shoulders, leaning into her.
She nodded, and smiled. "Though . . I don't have a spare change of clothes." Hailee frowned at the thought. "Can I borrow Mo's?" Camila swatted her arm, laughing as the brunette cooled the pain with her breathing. "What the hell, Sharkmila?"
"Really, "Sharkmila"?" Camila raised her eyebrow, crossing her arms at the weird nickname given to her.
"It's cool!"
"No, It's not."
"Whatever, you're delusional."
The two brunettes giggled all night long with Maya, but fell asleep in the midst of changing her diaper. Camila still had her striped long sleeve on, and her black leggings she knew Shawn adored. She wished he's be there in replace of Hailee at moments, so she could steal him for the night of course.
Meanwhile, the door creaked open with Shawn and a . . not-so-familiar girl.
