Ember's leapt into the darkening night and the crickets chirped softly. I tossed another log into the fire, my arm stiff from a small bullet wound. Glancing around the small clearing where we'd made camp for the night i took a look at my comrad's. There wasnt many of us left in our legement. Since the begining when we all started, over 30 of us had been lost. Now, in our small group, it was just me, Songbird,Johnny,Sunny,Andy, Sargent Peter's and some men from other legement's that had been lost sprinkled here and there. Songbird's word's where blown away from me by a gust of wind. I managed to catch the next verse of the song as it died down. "We're soldier's of the british and we fight and day, we never get a rest and only a months pay!" he called out loudly earning a round of snort's and chuckles from the others. "ay, songbird. Best be careful with yer word's or you may be looking at a pay cut!"johnny Exclaimed with a laugh. "oi! i've earned it!" Songbird exclaimed leaping up. "no you havnt! but you earned this!" johnny sent a playful blow into song's shoulder knocking the smaller man down. I gave a wry smile watching them begin to bicker. A shadow moved to the right of me and i flicked my gaze over checking for any German's. It was only sunny. He plopped down besides me by the fire. "strange bunch arent we?"sunny asked grinning at the fire. "ay, a bunch of air head's!" I teased. He grinned but it faded and silence filled between us. The only sound was johnny and songbird's arguing and the minor murmeres among the other's. Sunny stared at the fire before finnaly speaking. "hey o'brian can i ask you something?" he asked keeping his gaze on the fire. "yeah sunny?'' i replied feeling the joking nature seep out of me,turning into a serious feeling. "back home....do you have a brother or sister waiting for you?" He asked finnaly. "yeah. My older brother nick why?" I asked looking over at him surprised. "just....get out alive cullen. Go back to him. Prmoise me now, on all of our graves that you Cullen O'brian will make it back to you're brother alive."he said voice slightly panicking. " I swear sunny. Now tell me what this is about" I said worried for him. Worried for all of them. We'd all gotten close. They where my brothers in arms. "Ya know that legement that was killed last night in an ambush?" Sunny asked tear's in his eyes. "yeah" My responce was slow and cautious. " It was my brother's legement. He was killed..."he whispered quietly. I stared at him silently shock racing threw me. "sunny...im sorry" I finnaly said. A weak shrug was all I got in replie. "what happens in war? Death."he said standing. "night cullen"he said walking away to his own tent. "night sunny" I sighed. Sitting there staring at the fire i lost myself in memories of home....ireland. And that's where I was sitting....When the first gunshot rang out in the night.
