On that one cold fleeting night, lying there in my trench, the silence of the night was split into two by a German Soldier. Both side's of the fight had agreed to have a peace treaty till the end of Christmas day, Which happened to only be a few minutes away. Listaning to him sing I realized that I knew that tune. Maybe not the words he spoke in German but I definatly knew that achingly familar tune. Beside me, songbird who had become like my brother, whispered "all is calm and all is bright...". Quietly I stood and joined the singing man. I knew that if I was wrong about this....i'd die. But it didnt stop me from crossing that battle field. A miracle had formed on this cold Christmas day. I heared other's rising from their trenches following our lead and joining in the song. Then that German Soldier did somehting that broke my heart and filled my eyes with tears. He smiled at me and gripped my hand shaking it the look in ihs eyes saying "God willing my brother, we'll make it out alive". The devil's clock stroke midnight and the sky's lit up again. Where once heaven had just stood was blown to Hell again. The german shaking my hand, looked sadly at me before diving awya into his trench. I watched then lept silently into my own, picking up the warshire shotgun i'd been aquipted with and raised it trying to steady my aim. My arm shook from the experience i had just had and for just one gleaming moment the answer seemed so clear. Heaven's not beyond the cloud's, it's just beyond the fear.
