I wake to someone gently shaking me, “Ally, Ally it’s time to get up.” I moan and I stretch out forgetting completely that I had fallen asleep on the love seat out on the balcony. I look up and see Danni’s brown eyes looking down at me. “I can’t believe you fell asleep out here, it’s already one in the afternoon.”

“Sorry, I was just looking around and I was tired so I guess I sat here and ended up falling asleep.” As I sit up and rub my eyes, I listen to Danni lecture me. How it isn’t safe to sleep out here. That someone could have climbed up here and done something to me. But I don’t listen to a word of it.

I focus on the girl that stands in front of a mirror admiring herself. She strokes her pale blond hair, as her lips move as if she’s speaking. It’s different though, it’s almost as if she’s singing. I sit here and stare at her, intrigued by her beauty. Back in England, no one ever looked like this. I was even made fun of because of my own appearance. Everything there was always a dark dreary color covered by a sheet of rain.

The girl turns her glance sideways and catches a glimpse of me looking at her. It shocks me at first, only because of the color of her eyes. They’re the same exact unusual gold color as mine. She looks surprised for a moment as well, until she scowls at me and pulls her curtains shut. I jump as if she stuck an arrow in me, but I shake my head and return back to Danni. She just glares down at me intensely.

“You weren’t listening to a word I was saying were you?” She snaps at me. I am tempted to say I was just to calm her.

“No.” This kind of shocks her and angers her at the same time. “Are you angry?” She relaxes her shoulders and looks out into the ocean.

“No, it just bothered me that you said it so bluntly. Like you didn’t care if it hurt me or not.” I follow her gaze out onto the ocean; it’s a delicate aqua color now.

“Of course I cared if it hurt you. It’s just when you lie, people get angry at you, as well as if you tell the truth. So if it hurts them either way, why not just tell the truth. It hurts them more if they find out you were lying to them anyway.” She looks down at me.

“And where did you hear that?”

“My thoughts. I learned it just by living.” Her face starts to twist as if she’s trying to figure something out, but she shakes it off.

“Well anyway, you better get dressed. I’m taking you shopping today, so we need to pick out the best clothes for you.” The mood brightens after that, and I leap off the love seat. “You can borrow my clothes again. I’ve laid some out on my bed.” I smile at her, showing her my thanks, and walk off. I stumble into her room, and find a peach colored tank top, with a white jean shorts. I grab them, and walk into the bathroom. I brush through my hair and style it with a small bun on top my head, and the rest of my wavy hair flowing down over my shoulders. After I dress, I turn to walk out the door, but something catches my eye.

I turn around so I can see my reflection in the mirror, but my backside facing it. My angel wings are noticeable. Ever since I was born, I had giant white angel wings plastered on my back, and ever since then, I’ve been trying to hide them. I’m always teased because of them, if anyone sees them. I walk out of the bathroom, and catch Danni walking into hers.

“Danni.” She turns and looks at me pulling back her caramel hair into a bun. “Do you have like a t-shirt or something that I can wear instead?” The looks she gives me insists that I’m crazy.

“This is California dear, you’re not going to want to wear a t-shirt in the summer.” She starts to turn to continue with what she was doing, but I stop her again.

“But Danni. What about this?” I turn around pulling my hair aside so she can observe my birthmark. She walks forward and places one of her hands on my back. A shiver is sent up my spine from her chilled hand.
