When I wake up in the morning, everyone is already up. I find them all gathered around the dining room table with red and green cards spread out all over.
“Wow, I’m surprised to see you up.” Danni exclaims. The other two turn to look at me, and I jump a bit becoming embarrassed. I had come down in just my pajamas and my hair was pulled back into a bun with my ginger curls spilling out of it like yesterday.
“Don’t you look absolutely beautiful this morning.” Cheren says with a teasing tone. He seems to be in a better mood since last night.
Somehow I knew you were going to say something about it. I think aloud, still not being able to speak. I slump down into a chair next to him. What are you guys playing? I ask looking down at the cards again. They all look up at me with shocked expressions.
“You mean you’ve never played Apples to Apples?” Camdyn asks almost appalled, but I just simply shake my head. “Lemme explain then. First you deal five red cards to each player, which contain nouns or actions.” He explains as he also demonstrates it. “Once they’re all dealt, someone flips over a green card, which are simply adjectives. The person who flips it over is the judge of the round. Every player, except for the judge, lays down a red card they think best suits the green card, and the judge picks the best; not knowing which card belongs to whom. Whoever is the owner of the winning card gets to keep the green card, and the first one to get six green cards wins.” He turns back to me. “Understand?”
I think so. I say picking up the red cards he had laid down before me.
“OK then let’s play a few rounds.” Cheren demands. We do just that, and I start to get the hang of the game. The more I get use to it, the more fun and interesting it gets.
“So the word is cuddly.” Camdyn says as he flips over the green card for this round. I look at all the cards in my hand trying to find the best.
“Hey, is Ally the judge?” Cheren asks. I look up at him and shake my head. “Darn, I was going to put down dictionary.” He looks up at me with a smirk. “At least I would’ve had a chance with that one.” I shake my head at him as we all place down our cards, and Camdyn gathers them. He looks over them a few times, before choosing.
“I guess I have to go with cats.” Danni smiles as she reaches for the card. Cheren slams his cards on the table.
“What about cows!?” He shouts in protest. “They have their soft spotted fur and the glassy look on their faces!” We all laugh at him, and just continue with the game.
“Cheren you’re the judge this round.” He grins smugly and flips over the card.
“Shy.” He says leaning back in his chair crossing his arms. “And give me good ones to choose from.” I roll my eyes at him, and put a card down, followed by Camdyn and Danni. He picks them up, and no sooner he lays one back down. “Tooth Fairy defiantly wins.” I triumphantly smile as I reach and grasp the green card. Who knew I’d win that round.
“Wait a minute!” Camdyn shouts. “How is the tooth fairy shy!? She goes to everyone’s house!” Cheren simply laughs at him.
“That may be, but have you ever seen her?” Camdyn is opens his mouths about to object, but he reconsiders. He leans back in his chair defeated.
“That is true.” Just as Danni reaches to flip her green card over, there’s a knock at the door. We all turn and look at it as if it’s supposed to animate and attack us.
“I’ll get it.” Danni says as she pushes her chair back and strides over to the door. She hesitates before she pulls the door open, and gives a small jolt. “Oh, hello. Come right in.” Cheren starts to stand.
