Dreams

Every detail of those tantalizing dreams is locked in my memory, but instead of explaining me and that mysterious boy that kept on appearing in my dreams right off, I'll start with the most heart racing gaze I received from the first time in a sleep over with my best friend.

I was caught off guard when he looked at me. My chest felt a little tight. I looked down, suddenly shy. But when I looked up, he was staring at me. The glade seemed even quieter as our eyes met. I liked the way he looked, his eyes soft and probing. As if I could learn more about him just by studying his face.

After a long moment he smiled, a little embarrassed. What’s this hazy feeling? I wondered. My body was numb from this trance. I thought I know him in some way, but I have this feeling I can’t quite place. Before I got a chance to mouth a single word, my eyes snapped open from the blinding light.

“Rise and shine Missy,” Scarlett exclaimed. She was a morning person indeed.

“Thanks, I was having a great dream!” I said, grabbing a piece of paper from my desk beside my bed and sketched his face in all what I can recall. “Look!” I shove the portrait in her face.

“He’s cute,” she said with a giggle. “Maybe he is your soul mate; Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind. Dreams have also been described physiologically as a response to neural processes during sleep; psychologically as reflections of the subconscious.”

“Whoa! You sure know your stuff, I hope your right. I‘ve always to be around at least one person that I could connect with and love me –” I thought for a moment. “But I’m glad I met you, Scarlett.” I added hastily.

“I know. But I do wish you’d meet that guy of yours, there is a probability that you will meet him soon enough. And I hope we both end up with someone we love, and spend time together like always.”

“Me too”

“Too much drama and it’s still early in the morning. Come on, let’s grab something to eat.” She said, pulling me out under my bed sheet.

I walked in and my jaw fell open. Luneth. He sat slouched on the barstool then looked at us. “You could’ve told me you’re staying the night over.”

“Oh big brother, knowing you’d be sneaking behind us so no way.” Scarlett said, motioning me to sit beside her opposite of Luneth.

Luneth turned his attention back to me. “Aisleen, you’ve been with Scarlett since kindergarten.” I nodded but had a bad feeling about where this was going. “Both of you are on the school club together.” Again I nodded. “I bet you know quite a bit about each other.”

At my side, Scarlett kicked my leg under our table. I knew what she was thinking. That he had no idea how much we knew about each other. And I don’t just mean the secrets we entomb in our diaries. Scarlett is my untwin. She’s blue eyed, blond, and a few pounds over curvy. I’m a hazel eyed brunette with volumes of curly hair that holds its own against even the best flatiron. But there is an invisible thread that ties us together; both of us swear that tie began long before birth. Both of us swear it will continue to hold for the rest of our lives.

“And since then, you’ve been there to bully us. What made you decide to attend the same school as us?” I added

“You.” Just like always. He was thinking something, but instinct told me I probably didn’t want to know what. His blue eyes sliced into me, and the corners of his mouth tilted up. My heart fumbled a beat and in that pause, a feeling of gloomy darkness seemed to slide like a shadow over me. It vanished in an instant, but I was still staring at him. His smile wasn’t friendly. It was a smile that spelled trouble.

I let go of a sigh. “You seem to know a lot about me,” I said, making the understatement of the year. “More than you should. You seem to know exactly what to say to make me uncomfortable.”

“You make it easy.”

A spark of anger fired through me. “You admit you’re doing this on purpose?”

“This?”

“This—provoking me.”

“Say ‘provoking’ again. Your mouth looks provocative when you do.”

“We’re done.” I said, shoving all my notes and books into my duffel bag I brought last night. “Sorry, Scarlett but I’ll be going first.”

“Are you sure Aisleen? I can ask my brother to drive you home as his apology.” She said, eyeing Luneth. But he didn’t say anything instead he averted his gaze.

“Thanks for the kind offer but I can manage.”

Scarlett frowned and gave me a wave.

Luneth walked toward the door and opened it. “Then I’ll see you in school.”
