Driving down these all too familiar streets I felt at ease. Although it was nice to get away for the summer, things were not like they used to be. I looked at the empty passenger seat and sighed. Instead of driving me to camp this year, and coming up periodically for a visit, my boyfriend Drew, who was going to be a freshman at Vanderbilt that fall, was taking summer courses at Brown to get ahead.
I turned left towards the cabins on the water and hoped for the best. After all, my good friends from summers past would be there, and as I had learned from multiple previous camp experiences, you never know what's going to happen. I rolled down the windows and let the cool morning air blow my long auburn hair aimlessly.
Finally I pulled up to the Counselor in Training cabin where a handful of other guys and girls were unloading their trunks and duffels. Since this was my fifth year at Camp Aspen, I was a natural.
I didn't blink twice at the fact that all the other kids had their parents to help them, I could unload my car and unpack her bunk in half the time. These days my parents were hardly ever around, and I had grown fairly independent. The absence of my mother and father barely bothered me anymore. But for some reason I couldn't explain, it still hurt a little to watch another girl's parents hug and kiss her goodbye.
As I pulled on Drew's light blue baseball cap, I couldn't help but smile when I noticed how worn down it had become after the countless times I had found myself wearing it.
I shook my head and popped open the back. Before I could even start unloading my stuff I heard a voice behind me,"Hey there! I'm Lilly, I'm one of your counselors!" a small girl with a thick Australian accent cooed.
I smiled a bit taken aback, and introduced myself. I recognized some of the other counselors from years past but Lilly was definitely a first year. Despite being rather small, and lacking any visible muscles, Lilly picked up my trunk in a swift motion and disappeared into the cabin with ease. I followed, picking her pace up to a slight run to keep up, two Vera Bradley Duffel bags in hand.
Inside the cabin was the chaos I had become oh so accustomed to. Girls were running and hugging their friends they hadn't seen in a year, bags were being thrown randomly on bunks, everyone was shouting about something. I scanned the crowd for my friends from last year but they weren't there yet.
"Here's your bunk," Lilly shouted above the noise. Without hesitating I thanked her and handed over my phone and car keys. Although I loved my phone, and was used to having it where ever I went, I was capable of going without it for a couple weeks. Plus now that I was a CIT I had nights off.
As I began unpacking my bunk I couldn't help but notice her bunkmate's name was Ava, the name wasn't familiar but then again I wasn't the best with names either. Shrugging it off, I made my bed and put my shower stuff in my cubby.
Looking around I noticed not even half the girls had arrived yet. This first wave was the calm before the storm. I wandered around the cabin making small talk with some of the girls I remembered from last year. Everyone seemed nice, but I hadn't met a single person I had deemed worth my time, yet.
One by one girls filed in. I greeted my friends Liz and Abby. Like old times, we all congregated on my bunk gossiping about the other girls and the hot guys. We were so busy in conversation that I had yet to notice my bunkmate had returned.
As Ava moved around on the top bunk, the bed creaked. Abby and Liz couldn't help but giggle. I knew I probably wasn't going to like this Ava girl, so I decided she would make that clear the first day.
I motioned to my friends that I would be right back. As I stood up I made eye contact with who I assumed to be Ava, sitting up on the top bunk. To my surprise Ava actually looked pretty normal, not only that, but she was actually really pretty.
This Ava girl definitely met the characteristics of who would be considered my friends back home. I decided if Ava was cool, their group could totally use a new member.
Without an invitation I began climbing up to the top bunk. "I'm Hazel, I'm your bunkmate, this is my fifth summer here blah, blah, I get it you could care less," I managed to get a laugh out of Ava.
"So I'm guessing you're new here?"
"Is it that easy to tell?" Ava admitted, putting up her last picture, her cheeks turned a light pink.
"Hang out with me and my friends, and people will totally like you. I promise." Without waiting for a response I jumped off the bunk and returned to my friends.
I had my way of getting what I wanted and I already knew Ava couldn't deny my offer. After all, why wouldn't Ava want to hang out with me, I'm like, the coolest girl there.
