"you know what, draco? there are some things that stay the same. the sun comes up every morning and the moon sets every night, and the one thing that's always changing - always ripping my heart and putting it back together and shoving me in a corner just to pull me out, is you."

ok fuck I admit I love loud breakup fight scenes. this is short, but it's to send a message. I also want to clarify that this is an au so don't get mad I don't really hate this ship that much.

They were at it again. Well, they were always at it - ever since anyone could ever remember. No one even knew how Draco and Hermione had gotten together in the first place. They'd hated each other for ages and suddenly that was it, they were dating.

Hermione didn't think it was always this way. Draco used to show up on her doorstep with a smile and a dozen red roses. She missed that, she really did. She didn't know where that Draco had gone. Neither of them knew the reason it all started, Draco liked to blame it all on his dad. As if it was Hermione's fault for being a stupid mudblood and not being able to earn Malfoy Senior's blessing.

But then again, maybe if she hadn't insisted on trying to fix him - all of his wounds and demons included, she would've realized that they couldn't be fixed.

And there they were, the same place they would always be. Screaming hurtful things at each other, crying until one of them broke down. Draco would sigh and open his arms to her, kiss her forehead and promise to never fight again. But they always ended up right back where they started.

There was never a question of whether or not she loved him enough, or if he loved her. But maybe that was the problem.

"Just because you love a person doesn't make them the right one," Hermione whispered, looking up at Draco with doe brown eyes. This fight had been one of the worst, and both of them were left feeling like garbage. Hurt and miserable with or without each other.

"Is that what you think?" Draco asked softly. No matter what they said to the other, they knew they didn't mean it. Not really. But this time, Hermione did.

"Yes."

"Is this what you want? Do you think this is what love is?"

He reached for her hand, but she pulled it back. "I love you, Hermione." She shook her head, taking a step back from him. "I love you. But - "

"But what?!" He exclaimed, a constant crescendo, soft going to loud again. "Am I not enough for you?! What could I have possibly done to make you hate me this much?"

"You know what Malfoy?" She used the old nickname, hoping it would sting as much as his words always had every time they hit her. "What, Granger?" He sneered, venom and sarcasm dripping from his mouth. He almost scared her. All she saw was Malfoy from school, the one who had tried to hex her and spit slurs at her from across the hall.

"There are some things that stay the same. The sun comes up every morning and the moon sets every night, and the one thing that's always changing - always ripping my heart and putting it back together and shoving me in a corner just to pull me out, is you."

He stayed silent, speechless, unaware of anything to retort back. "You made me like this, and I made you like this. We're not good together. Not anymore. I love you, and that's why I have to go."

"You're really leaving? After everything?"

"You're toxic, Draco Malfoy. I pray to god that one day you'll be able to find someone healthy. That person isn't me."
