The day after Christmas, what a terrible day to be working. I'm in my dentist's office, now, waiting for my turn. But, December 26 just seems so sad. Everyone is just slowly and mournfully pealing off everything festive. I actually kind of liked the holidays. Everyone just seemed a lot happier and nicer, at least they pretended to be.
"Joy Harper!" A heavy set lady yells into the hideously lemon scented room. I unstick myself from the chair and follow her into a smaller room. "Sit down." She says bluntly. I do so and try situating myself in the reclined seat. On the little television there was an old cartoon I used to watch. God, how could I have ever loved that show?
The lady shoves all sorts of contraptions in my mouth and apparently thinks my face is a perfect place to rest her hands on. Why do hygienist do that? Faces are fragile. I think I might have a bruise now! When she is finally done torturing me she says, "The doctor will be with you in a minute." Then, she walks sassily away. Man, I do not like that woman.
I wait. And wait. And wait. Then, the doctor arrives in the room and looks at my teeth. He shoves a mirror like tool in my mouth and makes some disgusted faces. "When's the last time you flossed?" He says. Don't you remember, you were there! "I don't really floss," is what I say instead. "You got to keep up with your dental hygiene, you know. You only have one set of teeth, now. Do you know how to floss?" He asks. I give a weak nod and he runs the string in between my teeth.
"Alright, that was a pretty good check up. I'll give your mother a call so we can set up you're next appointment." He says and lets me leave. Thank god that's over. I can't stand the dentist.
I give a kick at a rock and start my way home. I didn't live far fro this place. But, the walk was a bit scary. I had to pass a regular homeless hang out and that was kind of terrifying. I didn't like them. I've seen to many homeless crazies in my time.
I walk quickly past the area with my head down. I give a sigh of relief once I know I'm in the clear. I walk at a fast pace the rest of the way home. I try the door and its locked. Miles, my older brother, must have locked the door on his way out. He always does this stuff. It frustrates me so much.
I go around back and reach over the fence and open the gate. If anyone is watching, they probably think I'm a robber. I walk into my backyard and my dog, Spud, greets me with a friendly bark. I give him a kind pat on the head and he licks my hand. "Good dog," I say and head to our patio door.
I try sliding it open but it too was locked. Well, this is a bummer. Luckily, we have some patio furniture, so I can make myself comfortable. I plop down in a seat and sit in silence. "Hey, come here boy," I say to Spud.
This is going to be a long wait.
