CHAPTER THREE

Her Birthday

July 10, 2011. Sunday. Raine's twenty-fifth birthday. Jerry had fetched her at Alejar Mansion that morning. He was driving his own car. They had agreed to attend the second mass that would start at around eight thirty in the morning.

"So where's your driver?" She had asked him as soon as she had sat down with him in front.

His reply, "It's his day-off."

"I already called Sheryl and my other friends. They had all agreed to take part on our wedding."

"I also did ask Victor and my other friends. They had all agreed too."

Raine opened up about Sheryl's seduction. "Sheryl told me that she came to your place yesterday."

"Yeah!"

"She said she had seduced you."

"Nothing happened."

"Yeah, she did tell me that you had turned her down."

He told her, "I'm keeping my promise."

"I'm glad you do."

He asked her. "When you were still in Connecticut, were you attending mass regularly?"

"Yes."

"Then I guess I have to attend the mass regularly too."

She asked him then, "Aren't you attending the mass regularly?"

His answer, "As if you don't know! Even when you were still here, I really haven't been attending the mass regularly."

"Well, I'm here now and we're engaged. So, learn to be a bit religious."

"I will."

They had sat down near the altar beside each other. Jerry was quite attentive as the mass progressed. They had attended mass together before. His behavior had really improved. He wasn't that impatient anymore just like the old times.

After the mass, they had talked to the parish priest about the wedding.

Their grandparents and parents who attended the first mass had already made reservations for January 8. The parish priest had instructed them to talk to his secretary for further information.

On their way back to Katarungan Village...

"Is church wedding just fine with you?" Jerry had asked her."

"Our families wanted a church wedding so I guess we just have to go with the flow."

Jerry then inquired, "Isn't it an insult to the church?"

Raine's answer, "I know we're not marrying for the usual reasons couples have. But we're already in this. We can't back out now. We have to do everything to please our families."

He agreed, "Yes."

"Well, we love each other."

"Yeah! You're my best friend and I really care a lot for you."

"I also do. I think that would be enough."

Jerry asked, "Where do you want us to live after the wedding?"

"I just don't want to live with our parents."

"Then we have to buy a house and lot at Reoul City."

"Ate Karina is a real estate executive. I'll ask her help then."

"Yeah...that would be nice!"
