It was no surprise to Liz when Kevin stopped by the restaurant that evening, dressed in a dark purple suit.Prepared this time, as she already told her boss she was on a "date", she headed over. Clad in a simple black dress that was kept in her locker just minutes before.
Sliding into the booth, she noticed he was speechless as he took her in, and she flushed. "Too fancy?"
He shook his head. "No, no, it looks fine. You look fine."
A smile overtook her features as she leaned forward slightly. "And you look dashing in purple."
"This old thing?"
"Yes, I've never even seen a guy wear a purple suit. It's... bold."
A fellow waitress by the name of Sally flew over at that moment, bottle of wine in hand. Shooting a wink in her direction, she turned her gaze to Kevin.
"You're quite lucky. Liz here is the kindest, most intelligent woman I know."
Blushing slightly, she ducked her head.
"I have to agree with you." His voice reached her ears. "When I first met her, we had an argument over her giving me an umbrella."
"Conversation." She intervened.
Sally chuckled. "I'll try that next time when I see a hot man drowning in the rain. Now do you want to order anything?"
They both shook their heads.
As soon as the redheaded waitress took her leave, he took it upon himself to pour them both a cup.
Taking a sip, she found herself relishing the moment. The bubbly taste of berries, the soft light of the restaurant, the feeling of happiness.
"Drink deep the cup of life; take it's dark wine into your soul. For it passes round the table only once."
She looked up in surprise.
"Jack McDevitt." He stated.
"I didn't think you read poetry." She stated.
"There are many things about me that you don't know of."
"Secrets?"
"Some of them, yes." His tone; guarded.
"I'm not going to pry." Liz started, treading carefully. "I don't know what your secrets could be, but if you keep it inside you, the pain will grow instead of lessen. Have you ever talked to someone?"
"Once." He sighed. "The one woman who I was obsessed with until recently."
"Can you tell me what was the subject?"
"Childhood." His tone was cold, bitter, disgusted, and broken all in one simple word. She didn't push.
"If you need to talk, Kevin. I'll be here."
He eyed her with a mixture of hope, doubt, and something else... then it was gone. "Have you ever tried to be a therapist?"
"Nope. Too much stress on top of my life."
A movement at the corner if her eye caught her attention, as she saw two women enter the restaurant. The dark haired private inspector was very familiar.
"Kevin, do you trust me?"
"Yes."
"Good. There is two women here looking for one of us, meet me back at my apartment in an hour."
Before she stood, he grabbed her wrist. "Don't do anything foolish."
"I thought you said you trusted me?" She smirked.
Jessica Jones and Trish Walker still stood by the door, surprised when Elizabeth Bradley popped up out of nowhere.
"Hey." She said. "What a coincidence that I'd see you here."
"Ms. Bradley." The blonde spoke. "We're here to ask you some questions."
"Not interested."
"Listen, we are trying to save your life!" Jones said, a dash irritated.
"Really? From what I see, you're following me."
"It's not like that." The blonde tried to say before Liz intervened. "No it's exactly like that. First you cover up my ex husband's murder, now you're stalking me!"
Her voice had risen, and she saw a few heads turn their way, including Andrew Parks, their security guard.
Jones having enough, grabbed the women's arm to pull her out of the restaurant when she screamed.
Immediately the security guard rushed over, gun on full display. "Put your hands on your head! Do it now!"
Liz continued to cry and make a huge deal, and soon the two women were led away, and she soon snuck out of the restaurant. Smiling when she noticed Kevin had gotten away during the commotion.
