Chapter 8

Deuce

Monitors, blood pressure machines, bright lights, and a room full of people is what Deuce saw when he opened his eyes for the first time in months. His eyes were much too hazy and he couldn't bear the beeping of the loud machines. He couldn't move his legs and could hardly move his neck to look around to see where he was. This was strange and wasn't how he recalled things. The last thing he remembered was the fight he had with the drunk man that pissed all over his floor. Anything after that was a blur. His mother was the first to notice he had awakened.

"Oh my baby, nurse he's awake." she yelled through the open door. Everyone crowded around Deon's bed. His skin was pallid and dry. The nurse entered the room with a clipboard full of papers and a brown folder. He walked over to the bed and flashed a light into Deon's eyes. "Welcome back Mr. Calhoun, hope you're feeling okay." Deon looked up at his mother, then struggled to turn his head to look at everyone that surrounded him.

Deuce cleared his throat and stammered with his words. "Wh, wher, where am I." he said in a lethargic tone. "Your at Kingston Memorial Medical Center." the doctor told me. "Will he be alright Dr. Hinton."

Dr. Hinton turned toward Mrs. Coleman and her husband. "He's been out for some time now Mam, so it will take a while for him to recover before there's any changes.

He's paralyzed now so with the proper therapy, he will get better but it's gonna take some time. He needs to rest so he can build his energy to get out of here. I'm not saying that he'll be fully recovered because like I said this kind of thing takes time."

Deuce's mother caressed the side of his face. "I just wish this all was just some sort of dream." his mother cried. Deuce just stared at the doctor. He could hear him, but it was a muffled sound that came out when a person spoke.

"Baby, I'm truly glad you're okay, you had us all in here worrying over you. But I knew with prayer, you'll pull through. Your my only child and I would have died myself if I had lost you." Mrs. Coleman was forever worrying about things that didn't have a thing to do with her.

Once she was worrying about when Ms. Jones would receive her income tax check so that she wouldn't have to be in the dark another month.

She'd call over to Ms. Jones house every day to find out if she'd gotten it yet. That's just the type of woman she was. She cared for people even when they didn't care nothing about her.

Ms. Jones was a neighbor that was forever at my parents house eating up all their food and always making passes at my dad. That's when my mom and dad were still together.

He focused in on his mother finally saying,"Ma I thought you had faith in me, you know God had me. He wasn't gonna let me go like that. Him and his angels had my back."

Everyone exited the room one at a time, all except his mother, aunt Francis, and dad. Mrs. Coleman let her emotion show. She was overjoyed that her son had made it through the test that had him where he was. His aunt walked around the bed, put her hand on his head and began to say a silent prayer.

After the prayer she told him, "You lay here and get yourself better now. Auntie loves you and I hope you know that." She left to find the others. "Son, I've never stopped having faith in you, its just that when I got the call that you were in the hospital. That kinda freaked me out." his mom said.

"I can't not worry about my child, my only child at that. I don't know what I would have done without you. I love you more than you may know. You get better so you can get out of this place."

She kissed Deon's cheek and left the room. His father looked as though he was about to let out a couple tears himself. "You are a blessing to me as well as your mother and other family members."
