I woke up to the sound of my alarm, again. It wasn't a pleasant sound, but the urge to make it stop motivated me to turn it off. I threw on a pair of ripped jeans and an old t-shirt, both of which were stained with paint. I went to the kitchen to pour myself a bowl of lucky charms, but I had already eaten most of the marshmallows out of them, so it wasn't as enjoyable as I'd hoped. I looked at the clock, and it read 6:25.
Woah, I was actually on time today. I went upstairs to brush my teeth and brush out my hair. Apparently I go swimming in my sleep, because somehow, it manages to get the same amount of knots that it had after I got out of the shower.
I put on my purple high top converse and threw my backpack over my shoulders before exiting to wait at the bus stop.
"Hey" I heard Derrick's voice from behind me.
"Hey" I replied.
"Did you do the Algebra homework" He asked.
"I really hope there wasn't a back to it", I said, "Mr. Bruster hates me enough already".
"Maybe that's because you kept cursing at him in Spanish" Derrick said.
"Well it's not like he knows the language" I replied. The bus rolled up to the street corner, and the doors swung open with a screech. We each boarded the bus and found ourselves a bus before the bus driver sped away.
I would tell you about the bus ride, but you'd already be asleep by now. We arrived at Coast City High within ten minutes. I sluggishly walked towards the library, where I spent the remaining time before homeroom. The bell rang and I was off to Mrs. Witoslawski's room for the useless ten minutes of homeroom.
"Hey, Derrick," I said at his locker, "Do you have the study guide for the history test?".
"Yeah, that test is tenth period, when are you going to study?" Derrick questioned.
"During lunch I hope" I replied. He handed me the sheet of paper and I shoved it in my pocket.
"Have fun at lunch" Derrick said before walking away. I felt someone tapping on my shoulder, I turned around to see a face most likely worse than Sinestro: Bella Misnick.
"Why were you talking to my boyfriend?" She asked.
"Oh, well you see, your boyfriend also happens to be my neighbor/best friend", I said,"I also guarantee that I've known him longer".
"Well, your just jealous because your single" She said smugly.
"Who said I was single?" I replied.
"Then who's your boyfriend" She said.
"Who said it was a boy" I said before walking away, satisfied with what I just did. No doubt that she would think that she just revealed that I was lesbian, but it's not like most people don't already know.
The rest of my day was as boring as any high school day would be. There was no back to Mr. Bruster's packet (thank god), but I'm guessing he thought I had copied off of Derrick's or something. We were dismissed to study hall, when a blast from the courtyard sent out an explosion, sending glass shards flying out from the now shattered windows.
I made sure the coast was clear before taking my ring that I had stashed in my pocket and suiting up. There was debris everywhere, I helped a few injured students up before telling them to get away. I then found out what was the cause of the blast. It was none other than Black Hand, the leader of the twisted black lantern corps. Below him were a few skeleton soldiers, a signature power of the black lanterns: the ability to reanimate dead bodies.
"So the great Blue Lantern of Earth has arrived", He taunted, "Such a pity, I was hoping for at least a Star Sapphire".
"Good luck with that" I said before lunging at him, projecting a shield in front of myself, shooting small blades at the villain. Two of the blades hit him, both in the lower thigh. Black Hand just twisted his face into the most repulsive smile that I've had ever seen.
"Need a little help?" I heard a voice behind me, I turned to see Guy Gardner, Green Lantern.
"It would make this a bit easier I guess" I replied.
Each of us shot energy from our rings, directed at Black Hand. The Green Lantern entity of will and the Blue Lantern entity of hope together, just might be enough to take down the entity of death. Another blast rang out, leaving a charred black patch of grass where Black Hand had fled.
"Look for injured students" I told Guy, "Thanks, by the way".
I started searching around for any victims of the explosion when I heard a familiar voice from the debris.
Derrick.
I looked over to find him pinned beneath what used to be a large pillar, with a huge shard of glass sticking from his chest. I immediately flew over to him, completely forgetting my secret identity problems and tearing off my mask. Tears were rolling down my cheeks, I attempted to pull off the pillar, but it was lodged into the wall.
"You're her, you're the Blue Lantern" He choked out, "Well, that explains a lot".
"No no no no no no" I said between sobs and grabbed his hand, "Stay with me, stay here".
"You know I can't, this is beyond both of us" He said, "Thank you".
His hands went cold and tears ran down my face.
"No, it's just beyond me" I said.
