------------------------------

Staring into the night Ares stands silently with a deep frown on his forehead. Strange emotions hold his heart in a firm grip. Never has he experienced such powerful feelings. With a lump in his throat he wonders why he feels like crying.

Bane has mixed the herbs you requested. When he gave you a dose of the deadly brew, frightening convulsions overpowered your body, and agonizing screams emerged from your lips. Seeing you in such torment Ares felt an overwhelming need to kill Bane. With exertion he managed to restrain himself. Suddenly the convulsions stopped, all muscles in your body relaxed, and not a sound was heard from your pale lips.

With a grave expression on his face Bane said 'Now all we can do is wait. 48 hours from now, we will know if the dose will either heal her wounds, or kill her'. Gently kissing your hand, he whispered 'Darkness will consume our world, if you leave us Majesty. I will pray for your soul'. Desperately he then turned around and ran out of the room.

Many hours has since passed, but Ares has not left your side even for a moment. Sitting down by the bed, he gently takes your hand, whispering 'Why do I feel this need to scream in despair and agony. I feel my very soul reach for yours'. Gently and ever so careful his fingers caress your cheek.

Suddenly you reach out and grab his hand, holding it with such force, Ares stares at you with wonder. Opening your eyes, purple steel almost blind him, as you look deep into his dark eyes. Deeply shaken he gasps and stutters 'Who are you?'. But there's no answer. Letting go of his hand, you fall asleep.

Hearing a noise, Ares turns around prepared to defend you. Seeing it is Bane, he relaxes. As Bane examines your wounds, Ares has to restrain himself not to hurt him. Deeply shaken he steps back, but his watchful eyes follow Bane's every move.

Turning Bane looks at Ares with a big happy smile. 'The wounds are healing. The sleep is a natural reaction'. Tears of joy run down the warriors face, as he looks at Ares. 'She will be very tired, but she's already improving'. Laughing so gentle, Ares looks at him in surprise, he continues 'She'll shake even your soul, almighty One. Better arm yourself. Dragonclaw is no ordinary mortal'. Looking at Ares bewildered face, he laughs even louder. A laughter so relieved and happy, Ares feels his anger vanish. Surprised he stares at Bane as he rushes outside, loudly shouting that the dragonmaiden has survived.

With a meditative expression in his dark eyes, Ares turns and stares at your face. The little dragon lies close by your side. When it gently begins to sing, Ares feels his soul quiver. Dragons normally never sing when humans are there. 'Kindred, my queen', the dragon chants over and over.

Deeply shocked hope begins to glow in Ares eyes. Then he recalls the spurn and contempt, both mortal and immortals show him, and he fights to regain control of his feelings. For the first time in his life he looses that battle. Sitting down beside your bed, he feels tears run down his cheeks.
