(Lewis)
I sit in my car, at the steering wheel. I look out of the window and I see the building that has that colorful banner hanging across the front.
"Misfits United!" It reads, every letter big and bubbly and bright. It's kinda childish.
I sigh and open my car door, and I step out into the warm day. It's partly cloudy, so there's not much need for my sunglasses, but I wear them anyways. I would rather not have anybody make eye contact with me. That'd be a good thing.
I quickly cross the street and go inside of the building with the banner, my head down, so maybe nobody will recognize me. I doubt they would, but still.
"Hello...?" I ask warily, looking into the big conference type room at the end of the hall.
"Hello! You must be here for the 'misfits united' meeting. I am too." A perky voice says and I turn abruptly around to see a short girl coming towards me.
She's got black hair that's bright red at the tips, and her eyes are big and brown.
"My names Kim Richards. People say that I talk a lot, but I don't think I do. Do I talk too much? Should I just be quiet?" She says, and I can see the questioning in her eyes.
"No, you're... You're fine. I'm, uh, Lewis, by the way. Lewis Brindley." I say, outstretching a hand to the smaller girl.
She grabs my hand and shakes it with a happy grin on her face, before skipping delightedly into the room.
I follow her in, more cautious and silently.
There are six chairs in the little room, set in a small circle so that everyone can see everyone. Above the chairs, the same banner as the front of the building hangs limply, swaying back and forth every so often. Kim is sitting in one of the chairs, her hands tapping on her leg rather quickly. Nervously.
I go and sit down next to her, and she looks at me and smiles. But I can see right through her. At least, now I can.
"You're acting." I say quietly and
she looks me straight in the eyes."Acting? I beg your pardon, but I rather suck at acting." She says, her perky demeanor gone now.
"Your perkiness. It's fake. You were pretending to be all happy but I know your faking it. Why would you be at this meeting if you were truly happy." I say matter-of-factly, and uneasy settles in her brown eyes.
"Shut your mouth. I... I am happy. I am. Just let it be, Lewis. I am happy, and you're just..." She snaps, getting angry at me, but then it all disappears, and she's quiet again.
"I'm just what?" I ask, prompting her to finish her sentence.
"Right. You're just right." She mumbles and I sigh.
"Well... At least we're both miserable. That way we don't feel awkward." I say, feeling kinda bad now that I made her realize she isn't happy.
"I just don't know how to, ya know, talk to people. I get really scared and then I just turn into a different person. I try and be happy just to prove that I'm ok... But I'm not ok." Kim says quietly and that intrigues me more.
But just as I'm about to ask why she's not ok, a knock comes.
We both turn to see a boy standing there. He has shaggy blonde hair and some goofy looking goggles on his head. He steps into the room slowly.
"So, uh, this is 'Misfits United'?" He asks carefully.
"Yeah. I'm Lewis. That's Kim. We both got here a couple of minutes ago." I say and he comes and takes a seat at the opposite side of the circle from us.
"Uh, well, I'm Duncan... Duncan Jones." He says and Kim sticks her hand out into the empty space between the chairs.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Duncan. I think that we'll get along just peachy!" Kim says, transforming back into that perky girl that I discovered to be false only moments ago.
Duncan shakes her hand warily, before he brings his arm back to his side. We all just sit in silence, not knowing what to say to one another.
"Hello?" A voice calls and we all turn and look to the door.
"Here it is! Oh, Simon, you twat! You're going the wrong way!" The voice shouts and we all kind of look to one another.
A moment later, two people come into the room. One of them is a girl who has long blonde hair that's dyed a blue-ish-green at the ends, and she has pretty blue eyes. She also wears an owl hat atop her head, which I find rather peculiar. The other is a ginger headed guy, who has brown eyes that skitter nervously across the room.
"Join us in our circle of misery." I say sarcastically and the two sit down. The girl ending up next to Kim, the boy ending up next to me.
"Is this the entire meeting?" The girl asks and I shrug.
"I don't know, but I hope that there's many more! Where we can all become best friends forever!" Kim says excitedly and I look at her through the corner of my eye.
I was going to find out who that girl truly was. No matter what.
"Well, should we start? I mean, I don't think we know how to run these kind of things. At least, I don't." The guy stammers and I look at him.
"Well, we could go around and say names and ages. To get a better idea of everybody." I suggest and Kim claps happily.
"I'll go first! My name is Kim Richards and I am 16 years old!" Kim says excitedly, and everybody mutters some kind of hello.
"Well, I'm Hannah Rutherford, and I'm 17." The girl says, twirling her hair around her fingers.
"Duncan Jones. 17." Is all Duncan says, and I am beginning to get the feeling that he doesn't talk all that much.
"I'm Simon Lane, and I am 18." The guy says and then, all eyes fall on me.
"Um, well, I'm Lewis Brindley, and I'm 18." I say and they all nod, and yes, Kim nods enthusiastically. Too enthusiastically.
As the other begin to talk, I get a strange feeling in my gut. A feeling that this group may be the best thing that will ever happen to me.
